Strengthening cooperation between Vietnam and Rhodes Island, Greece

Ambassador Pham Thi Thu Huong hopes to promote cooperation with Rhodes Island in areas that are strengths of both sides, including tourism.

From August 3-6, Ambassador Pham Thi Thu Huong led a delegation from the Vietnamese Embassy to visit and work on Rhodes Island, the largest island in the Dodecanese archipelago, located in the Southeast Aegean Sea, Greece.

At the meeting with Mr. Chalkias Konstantinos, Deputy Mayor of Rhodes Island in charge of economy, finance and cultural heritage, Ambassador Pham Thi Thu Huong was introduced to the history of formation, development, architecture and unique culture of Rhodes, including the medieval ancient urban area recognized by UNESCO and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

Ambassador Pham Thi Thu Huong expressed her impression of the diverse and attractive development of Rhodes Island, especially the preservation and maintenance of heritages and cultural features from the medieval period that have created its own unique features, making Rhodes, the “island of roses” and considered the origin of the word “rose” in the world , a leading tourist destination in Greece. This is also a common point in the development policy between the two countries.

The Vietnamese government focuses on developing a green, sustainable economy, preserving and developing culture and national identity in parallel with economic and social development. With a long coastline, the marine economy, including tourism development, plays an important role in economic development in Vietnam. Every year, Vietnam welcomes more than 17,000 tourists and is internationally recognized as one of the most attractive and safest destinations in Asia.

Ambassador Pham Thi Thu Huong expressed her impression of the diverse and attractive development of Rhodes Island, especially the preservation and maintenance of heritages.

On that basis, Ambassador Pham Thi Thu Huong wishes to promote cooperation with Rhodes Island in areas that are strengths of both sides, including tourism through activities such as enhancing the image of Vietnam at local festivals through the participation and contribution of the Vietnamese community living on the island; connecting Vietnamese travel companies with partners of Rhodes Island; establishing cooperation and linkages between universities, tourism and hotel service training establishments, and exchanging trainees; receiving Vietnamese workers to work at restaurants, hotels, and service establishments on the island...

Vietnam is ready to invite the Rhodes Island government to visit Vietnam to explore specific cooperation possibilities. The Deputy Mayor of Rhodes Island agreed with the proposals of the Vietnamese Ambassador and hoped that the two sides would continue to discuss in the coming time to specify the directions and contents of cooperation.

Also within the framework of the working trip, Ambassador Pham Thi Thu Huong met with representatives of the Vietnamese community living on Rhodes Island.

Along with visiting the lives of the people, the Ambassador introduced new policies and laws in areas such as identity cards, land, housing, real estate business, nationality law... issued in the direction of creating favorable conditions for people returning to the country to live, work, invest, and do business, aiming to ensure the rights of Vietnamese citizens abroad are equivalent to those of people in the country.

The Ambassador also informed about the country's socio-economic development achievements in recent times, policies and activities to connect overseas Vietnamese, especially the young generation, with their homeland; and models of associations and unions of overseas Vietnamese in other countries and in Europe.

The Ambassador encouraged the people to elect a Head of the Liaison Committee of Vietnamese people in Rhodes Island to inform them about policies and activities to connect overseas Vietnamese, especially the young generation, even though they live far from the Fatherland; towards establishing associations and groups of Vietnamese people here.
