(CLO) Hundreds of Chinese citizens rescued from online scam centers in Myanmar were repatriated to China via Thailand on Thursday (March 6, 2025). Thailand said its goal was to repatriate 1,500 workers per week.

Thailand, Myanmar, and China have collaborated in recent weeks to dismantle illegal online scam complexes along the Thai-Myanmar border, where thousands of foreign workers, mostly Chinese nationals, are employed.

Under pressure from Beijing, Myanmar cracked down on some of these complexes, freeing around 7,000 workers from more than two dozen countries.

Approximately 600 Chinese citizens were repatriated from Myanmar via Thailand two weeks ago. Last week, the three countries held talks in Bangkok to arrange further repatriations.

On Thursday (March 6), Thai media broadcast footage of hundreds of Chinese workers being transported from Myanmar by bus and boarding planes back to China at Mae Sot Airport. Thai border forces later stated that 456 Chinese citizens had been repatriated on six chartered flights operated by China Southern.

Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura added that "another group of Chinese citizens" were also repatriated on Thursday, but did not disclose the exact number.
