Thailand is Vietnam's largest import market in ASEAN. Thailand's petroleum imports from Vietnam increased nearly 16 times.

According to the General Department of Customs, in the first 8 months of 2024, Vietnam - ASEAN trade reached 54.9 billion USD, up 12.5% ​​over the same period last year. Vietnam had a trade deficit of 5.6 billion USD of goods from this bloc.

Regarding exports, in the first 8 months of 2024, Vietnam earned 24.6 billion USD from exporting goods to ASEAN, up 12.6% over the same period last year.

Thailand continued to be the largest export market with a value of 5.23 billion USD, up 7.2% over the same period last year. Following were Indonesia with 4.15 billion USD and the Philippines with 4.07 billion USD, up 23.6% and 17% respectively over the same period last year.

Also in the billion-dollar group, goods exported to Cambodia reached 3.52 billion USD, up 3.9% over the same period last year; Malaysia reached 3.48 billion USD, up 4.2% over the same period last year; Singapore with 3.46 billion USD, up 26.3% over the same period last year.

Exports to six markets with a turnover of billions of USD in the bloc reached a total of 23.93 billion USD, accounting for 97% of exports to ASEAN.

In the bloc, Myanmar is the only export market with a decrease in turnover of 36.7% compared to the same period last year, to 197 million USD.

In contrast, Brunei saw a 569% increase in turnover compared to the same period last year, reaching 87.7 million USD. Vietnam also earned 429 million USD from exporting goods to Laos, up 20.6% compared to the same period last year.

Regarding imports, Vietnam spent 30.2 billion USD importing goods from ASEAN in the first 8 months of 2024, up 12.4% over the same period last year.

Thailand was the largest import market with 7.8 billion USD, a slight increase of 1.3% over the same period last year. The other two markets with import turnover of over 6 billion USD were Indonesia with 6.5 billion USD, an increase of 14.5% and Malaysia with 6.14 billion USD, an increase of 22.4% over the same period last year.

Singapore and Cambodia followed with turnover reaching 3.35 billion USD, a slight increase of 1.3% over the same period last year and 3.3 billion USD, an increase of 28.4% over the same period last year, respectively.

In the billion-dollar group, the Philippines is Vietnam's import market with the lowest turnover at 1.66 billion USD, up 4% over the same period last year.

Vietnam's total import turnover from the above 6 markets reached 28.8 billion USD, accounting for 95% of the import proportion of goods from this bloc in the first 8 months of 2024.

In addition, Vietnam also spent 915 million USD on goods from Laos, up 25.7% over the same period last year; imported 336 million USD from Brunei, up 252% over the same period last year and 207 million USD from Myanmar, up 16.7% over the same period last year.
