The workshop on the importance and historical value of Cho Quan Hospital prison camp, where comrade Tran Phu, the first General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was detained and sacrificed, was organized by the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, the People's Committee of District 5, Ho Chi Minh City in collaboration with the Hospital for Tropical Diseases and the Ho Chi Minh Museum.
Cho Quan Hospital's detention camp, where the first General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Tran Phu, was detained and died, is located within the grounds of the Tropical Diseases Hospital (HCMC).

On August 26, 1931, the first General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Tran Phu, after being arrested, tortured, and seriously ill, was taken to this prison camp. On September 6, 1931, Tran Phu sacrificed his life at the age of 27 after leaving a message: "Keep up your fighting spirit."

There are no documents to determine the date of the prison's establishment, but it is possible that the prison was built and operated from around 1874-1875. This is the place associated with the history of Cho Quan Hospital - the earliest Western hospital in Vietnam.
The prison camp was recognized as a national historical-cultural relic on November 16, 1988.

Starting from the opening day of February 13, 1861 of Cho Quan Hospital, the Tropical Diseases Hospital has been recognized as the oldest hospital in Vietnam by the Vietnam Record Organization (VIETKINGS), a unit under the Central Vietnam Record Association.
Due to the increasingly degraded relic over time, on April 18, 2023, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council passed the Resolution "Restoration and embellishment of the national historical relic of Cho Quan Hospital prison located within the premises of the Tropical Diseases Hospital". The project will be completed on May 1, 2024, on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the birth of General Secretary Tran Phu.
