Thanh Hoa: Teacher slapped student, ruptured eardrum

A high school teacher in Thanh Hoa province admitted that he was wrong when he slapped a 7th grade student three times in the face, causing the student's left eardrum to rupture.

On August 13th, a video clip appeared on social media along with information stating that a teacher went to a student's home and slapped the student three times in the face before leaving.

When teacher Vu Xuan Tuyen arrived at the student's house, he called the male student out to the yard and then slapped him in the face.

Many viewers of the video and accompanying information believe that the teacher's actions were inappropriate, as he went to the student's home to assault him.

According to Thanh Nien newspaper's investigation, the clip was recorded on the morning of August 8th at a family home in Tay Do commune ( Thanh Hoa province). At that time, Mr. Vu Xuan Tuyen (currently a teacher at Vinh Loc High School, Thanh Hoa province) arrived at his uncle's house on his motorbike and slapped his uncle's son (a 7th-grade student) three times in the face.

As a result, the 7th-grade student suffered a ruptured eardrum in his left ear and had to be taken to the Hanoi Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital for treatment. The patient is now stable and has been transferred to the Thanh Hoa Pediatric Hospital for further treatment.

Speaking to reporters, teacher Vu Xuan Tuyen admitted that the person in the video slapping the student was himself. Mr. Tuyen also acknowledged that his actions were wrong, stating that he couldn't control his anger and therefore slapped his cousin's child.

"I was wrong to slap him; that was the wrong way to handle it. We're like siblings. I've been tutoring him and some other family members since third grade, and he's now in seventh grade."

This summer I continued tutoring her, but recently she was talking to her friends and saying unpleasant things about me. I overheard it, and I was so upset that I went to her house and acted inappropriately.

"My wife and I have also gone to the family to apologize to the aunt and uncle, and I feel a lot of pressure now that the clip has gone viral online," Mr. Tuyen said.

Following the incident, the Board of Directors of Vinh Loc High School held an emergency meeting and requested teacher Vu Xuan Tuyen to provide a report on the matter. Currently, Vinh Loc High School is continuing to review the case to take disciplinary action against the teacher if any violations are found.
