Developing supporting industries – the foundation for the textile and garment industry to break through

In recent years, Thanh Hoa province has identified supporting industry as one of the important pillars to promote industrial growth, especially in the textile and garment sector - the province's key export industry. With more than 300 operating enterprises, Thanh Hoa textile and garment not only creates jobs for tens of thousands of workers but also contributes significantly to export turnover and the local budget.

To improve competitiveness, textile and garment enterprises are promoting value chain linkages through the development of supporting industries such as fiber production, dyeing, accessories, packaging, etc. The province also encourages the formation of textile and garment industrial clusters associated with wastewater treatment systems, logistics infrastructure and raw material supply centers, to reduce costs and shorten production time.

According to the leader of the Thanh Hoa Department of Industry and Trade, supporting industries play a "supporting" role for the textile and garment industry to develop more stably and proactively: Thanh Hoa is focusing on attracting investment in projects to produce fibers, fabrics, garment accessories and environmentally friendly textile and dyeing wastewater treatment technology. The synchronous development of the value chain not only helps reduce import dependence but also creates conditions for Thanh Hoa enterprises to participate more deeply in the global supply chain.

In fact, synchronous investment in infrastructure and supporting industries is bringing about clear results. Many enterprises have been able to self-supply raw materials, increase the localization rate and meet strict requirements on origin in free trade agreements (FTAs).

The province also focuses on training high-quality workers, digital transformation in production management and application of advanced technology. Support from local authorities in terms of procedures, premises and preferential policies has created favorable conditions for businesses to confidently invest long-term.

Greening production is key to expanding international markets

Along with the development of supporting industries, “greening” is becoming an inevitable trend of Thanh Hoa textile industry. Meeting standards on emissions, recycling and clean energy is not only a requirement from major markets such as the EU, the US, and Japan, but also a direction to help businesses develop sustainably.

Many businesses in the area have invested in solar power systems, applied energy-saving production processes, used recycled fibers and environmentally friendly materials. Some units have boldly converted technology, invested in automated production lines to minimize waste, and at the same time improve the working environment for workers.

A representative of the Joint Venture Garment Trading Company Limited in Thanh Hoa said: We consider green transformation as a long-term direction. Investing in solar power systems, using organic fibers and water-saving technology not only helps reduce production costs but also enhances prestige with international customers. Currently, the company has signed long-term orders with partners in Europe and Canada, creating stable jobs for nearly hundreds of workers.

According to the report of Thanh Hoa Textile and Garment Association, in the first 9 months of 2025, garment export output reached more than 400 million products, up 12% over the same period; in which, the group of enterprises applying green production accounted for nearly 60% of the total export turnover of the whole industry. This is a positive signal, affirming the effectiveness of the transformation process.

However, the greening process also poses significant challenges, as the cost of technology investment and environmental standards is quite high. To support businesses, Thanh Hoa province is implementing many incentive policies such as preferential loans for energy saving projects, supporting the transfer of clean technology and promoting trade in potential markets.

Towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly textile industry

Developing supporting industries associated with green transformation is opening up a new direction for Thanh Hoa’s textile and garment industry. This is not only a solution to maintain export growth but also the key for businesses to affirm their brands in the global value chain.

With the determination of the government and business community, along with taking advantage of opportunities from FTAs and sustainable consumption trends, Thanh Hoa textile and garment industry is gradually affirming its position as a major production and export center of the North Central region.

In the future, when supporting industry projects come into operation and green production models are replicated, Thanh Hoa will have enough conditions to become a "stronghold" of modern, sustainable and environmentally friendly textile and garment industry - contributing to realizing the goal of green development and inclusive growth that the province has set.
