The new Road Traffic Safety Law clearly stipulates that when participating in traffic, drivers must carry a certificate of mandatory civil liability insurance for motor vehicle owners. This includes motorcycles, the most common mode of transportation in Vietnam.
The insurance period is stipulated in Article 9 of Government Decree No. 67/2023/ND-CP. Accordingly, mandatory civil liability insurance for motor vehicle owners has a minimum validity period of 1 year and a maximum of 3 years. However, in some special cases, the insurance period may be less than 1 year.
People should pay attention to the expiration date of motorcycle insurance.
The following cases may be eligible for insurance coverage for less than one year:
Foreign motor vehicles temporarily imported and re-exported: When foreign motor vehicles participate in traffic in Vietnam for a period of less than one year, the vehicle owner can purchase short-term insurance suitable for the vehicle's period of operation.
Motor vehicles with a service life of less than one year: According to the law, these vehicles are allowed to purchase insurance for a shorter period.
Motor vehicles subject to temporary registration: Vehicles temporarily registered according to regulations of the Ministry of Public Security are also allowed to purchase insurance for less than one year.
Additionally, if a vehicle owner possesses multiple vehicles and wishes to synchronize the insurance coverage for all of them, the insurance term can be adjusted to less than one year, corresponding to the remaining time of the first insurance contract within the year.
The law also clearly stipulates that, during the insurance period, if there is a transfer of ownership of the motor vehicle, the previous owner has the right to request termination of the insurance contract. In this case, the insurance company must refund the insurance premium corresponding to the remaining period of the contract from the time of termination.
Motorcycle insurance is not only a legal obligation but also an important financial protection measure for road users. Complying with insurance policy deadlines helps people avoid unnecessary risks and ensures safety while traveling on the road.
