10th grade exam 'heavy pressure', students are listless and lethargic

National Assembly delegates said that the 10th grade exam is creating heavy pressure, making students lethargic, even desperate if they fail the exam.

On the morning of December 4, the 10th session of the 15th National Assembly continued its program. Delegates discussed in the hall the Government's work report for the 2021-2026 term and a number of other reports.

Delegate Nguyen Thi Tuyet Nga (Quang Tri) highly appreciated the results achieved, such as the issuance of Resolution 71 on breakthroughs in education and training development, legalization of universal preschool education for children aged 3-5, tuition exemption for preschool and primary school students, and the presentation of the National Target Program for Education...

However, Ms. Nga said that the Government 's report on the limitations of education and training is still too general, and that it is necessary to identify the shortcomings more clearly. One of these is the burden of exams arising from the post-secondary education stream.

The 10th grade exam is becoming a "miniature national exam"

Ms. Nga cited the Government's project "Career education and student orientation in general education for the period 2018 - 2025", which sets the target that by 2025, at least 40% of junior high school graduates will continue to study at vocational training institutions at elementary and intermediate levels.

The female delegate said that the streaming is being misunderstood and implemented incorrectly; there is a mentality that whoever fails the high school entrance exam will go to vocational school, streaming is associated with failure, not a choice. Clearly, this is a forced streaming, instead of whoever has strengths and a clear career orientation will choose the appropriate path.

According to Ms. Nga, the 10th grade exam is becoming a "miniature national exam" with heavy pressure. While high school should be a general education level, every student should have the right to study.

The female delegate cited the low rate of students entering high school in some localities, showing that "we have not properly ensured access to 12 years of general education."

"Seeing the exhausted, dull faces of 15-year-old children under pressure from exams, reading the desperate letters of children who failed the high school entrance exam, my heart aches," she said.

Another paradox pointed out by Ms. Nga is that the public school entrance exam is "too tough", many students, despite studying well, cannot pass the competitive exams. As a result, students from poor families are forced to go to private schools, with tuition fees that are beyond their family's ability.

According to delegates, this is making equity in education not guaranteed.

Ms. Nga recommended that it is necessary to open the door to high school, invest properly in vocational high schools, and respect the right of learners to choose.

Along with that is improving exams, adjusting the 10th grade admission method to reduce pressure and create more opportunities for students.

Streaming must be based on voluntariness and ability, not turning into a "barrier" from grade 9; building streaming based on the right to study, ensuring enough places in public high schools so that students are not forced to stream.

School and family violence remains complicated

Delegate Nguyen Thi Viet Nga (Hai Phong) also highly appreciated the proud achievements of the past term. However, there is still a big problem that bothers her, which is that social culture has not developed in proportion to the economy.

In reality, school violence and domestic violence continue to develop in a complex manner. Online fraud, gambling, game addiction, and social media addiction are increasingly widespread, especially among young people.

Behavioral culture in public places, in traffic, and on the Internet still has many shortcomings. Manifestations of pragmatism, materialism, superficiality, and the desire for quick fame are having a negative influence on a segment of young people.

Family, school, community and cyberspace are the "four pillars" that shape the personality of the young generation. However, the role of the family in education is currently weakened; schools lack teachers and are overloaded; cyberspace is full of harmful content...

The female delegate recommended the need to build a national strategy on culture and lifestyle in the digital age linked to family, school, community and cyberspace.

At the same time, establish a set of indicators on social ethics and behavior as a mandatory part of the national development indicator system.

She also emphasized that it is necessary to take public service culture, political culture, and rule of law culture as examples to guide society; strongly develop policy communication work with educational values, not only to fight against evil but also to build cultural resistance for the people.
