High school students following the 2018 General Education Program will have changes in the high school graduation exam from 2025 onwards.

To prepare for the report to the Government Standing Committee on the high school graduation exam plan from 2025 onwards, on August 24, at the conference summarizing the 2022-2023 school year and deploying tasks for the 2023-2024 school year for quality management and inspection and examination of the Department of Education and Training, organized by the Department of Quality Management, Ministry of Education and Training in Ho Chi Minh City, the Ministry of Education and Training proposed 2 options to get opinions from leaders of local Departments of Education and Training.

Accordingly, the high school graduation exam is based on subjects, in which compulsory subjects include literature, math, foreign languages, history (for general education); literature, math, history (for continuing education) and elective subjects at high school level include: physics, chemistry, biology, geography, economic and legal education, information technology, technology.

At the conference, the Ministry of Education and Training proposed two options to survey the opinions of leaders of the Departments of Education and Training on the graduation exam plan applicable to students studying under the 2018 General Education Program, which is the high school graduation exam from 2025 onwards.

Accordingly, option 1 includes math, literature, foreign language, history and 2 elective subjects from the chosen subjects.

Option 2 includes math, literature, foreign language and 2 elective subjects from the subjects already studied, including history.

Faced with the two options given by the Ministry of Education and Training above, the vice principal of a famous high school in Thu Duc City (HCMC) said that the second option is appropriate.

This vice principal believes that compulsory study, for example, for history, while exams depend on needs and abilities. Studying is career-oriented and not a knowledge test, so the second option with 3 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects from the subjects studied, including history, is in line with the goals set out in the 2028 program. Thus, having 5 subjects in the high school graduation exam also makes the exam easier. If using option 1 as the Ministry of Education and Training proposed in the previous draft, the exam will increase the number of subjects and at the same time lean towards social subjects.

At the same time, this vice principal believes that universities now have many separate admission methods, in which there is a growing trend of increasing the rate of admission based on academic records. "Therefore, choosing fewer subjects, including 3 compulsory subjects: math, literature, foreign language, and the remaining 2 subjects are optional from the subjects studied, is a suitable solution, reducing pressure on candidates," the vice principal emphasized.

Similarly, Mr. To Lam Vien Khoa, Vice Principal of Gia Dinh High School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), also chose option number 2.

According to Mr. Vien Khoa, university admissions now have many methods, not just using the results of the high school graduation exam. Therefore, any exam method that helps students feel comfortable and reduces pressure will be the most suitable method.

Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), also commented that taking 3 compulsory subjects: math, literature, foreign language and the remaining 2 subjects are optional from the subjects they have studied, including history, will make students feel more comfortable.

"In addition, students will be proactive and flexible in choosing subjects after high school according to their career orientation, promoting their personal capacity and thinking," Mr. Phu emphasized.
