The Ministry of Education and Training has just issued the framework for the 2023-2024 school year for preschool, general education, and continuing education. It stipulates that the earliest start date for the school year is one week before the official opening ceremony. For first grade, the earliest start date is two weeks before the official opening ceremony. The official opening ceremony for the new school year will be held on September 5th.
The first semester will end before January 15, 2024; the second semester's educational plan will be completed before May 25, 2024, and the school year will end before May 31, 2024.
The process of certifying completion of primary school and awarding lower secondary school diplomas will be completed before June 30, 2024. Enrollment for entry-level classes will be completed before July 31, 2024.
Take the high school graduation exam and other national-level exams as prescribed and guided by the Ministry of Education and Training.
Local authorities proactively and flexibly develop school year schedules while ensuring the required number of actual school weeks. For preschool and general education, there are 35 weeks of actual schooling (18 weeks in the first semester and 17 weeks in the second semester).
For continuing education (implementing lower secondary and upper secondary education programs), there are 32 weeks of actual schooling for grades 9 and 12, with 16 weeks per semester; grades 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11 have 35 weeks of actual schooling (18 weeks in the first semester and 17 weeks in the second semester).
The school year schedule must be appropriate to the characteristics and practical conditions of the locality. Public holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays are observed according to regulations; ensuring uniformity across all educational levels in a residential area, especially in schools with multiple levels of education.
The Director of the Department of Education and Training decides to allow students to take time off from school in cases of extreme weather or natural disasters and arranges for make-up classes; ensuring that teachers' time off during the school year is also maintained.
The Ministry of Education and Training notes that an earlier start date and an extension of the school year should not exceed 15 days compared to the time stipulated in the Ministry's 2023-2024 school year time frame to ensure the implementation and completion of the education program in cases of natural disasters, epidemics, etc.
