National valedictorian of block D01 did not take extra classes, self-studied English through movies and music

Nguyen Phuong Linh, a 12A12 student at Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted, said that when she took the 2024 high school graduation exam, Linh never thought about or set a goal of becoming valedictorian.

Valedictorian does not take extra classes

At exactly 8am this morning, Linh checked her exam scores and saw that she got 28.75 points for block D01 (9 in math, 9.75 in literature, 10 in English). In addition, her scores for history, geography, and civics were 9; 9.75; and 9.5, respectively.

“After checking my score, I saw that my score was quite high, so I felt secure and turned off the computer and lay down to relax. At around 9 o’clock, someone called to inform me that I was the national valedictorian of block D01. I was extremely surprised and could not keep calm. After that, I called my mother and cried,” Linh said.

The female student said she never set a goal of being valedictorian. She took the high school graduation exam with a very relaxed mindset, only using the result as a condition for early admission to university.

Linh herself commented that she has a great advantage in having the ability to study all subjects evenly and balanced. 100% of the time in class, the female student actively approaches knowledge, listens to the teacher's lectures so that she does not waste time reviewing at home. In particular, the female student says no to extra classes to have more time to study on her own.

“I only focus on learning knowledge in class, I don’t take extra classes because the teachers who teach me in class are the ones who understand me best, know what shortcomings I need to improve the most. Just practicing the questions the teachers give in class is already a lot and good,” Linh said.

According to Linh, because she was an English major, she already had a good knowledge base. For the high school graduation exam, Linh did not spend too much time studying.

Since mid-term 2 of grade 11, Linh has achieved an IELTS certificate of 8.0. For all three years of high school, Linh was in the provincial English team (grade 10 won second prize, grades 11 and 12 won third prize).

“Besides studying from books at school, I often learn English through my hobbies of listening to music and watching movies in English… This is a natural way to learn English, without forcing it,” Linh revealed.

Linh plans to study a bachelor’s degree in business administration at VinUni University, and was accepted early before Tet. Linh hopes to become a business consultant in the future, a job she was inspired by her father.

“I want to say that, in fact, everyone has potential, ability and value. It is important to understand yourself to exploit these things,” Linh shared.

English specialized class but has 12 students achieving 9.5 or higher in literature

Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, homeroom teacher of class 12A2 at Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted, said that she and the whole class are very proud of Linh's results.

“As a homeroom teacher, accompanying Linh for 3 years of study, observing Linh's learning process and efforts, this is a very logical result. Linh studies well in all subjects, especially excelling in her specialized subject, English.

In all the exams, Linh was always in the top scorers. In the first exam of the Department for students in the whole province, Linh was the valedictorian of the whole province,” said Ms. Huyen.

According to Ms. Huyen, Linh's 9.75 score in literature is also the highest score in the Vinh Phuc province examination council.

“It’s not a literature class, but Linh’s whole class is very good at literature. The average score for literature in the high school graduation exam for the whole class is 9.22. Besides Linh who got 9.75, there are 11 students in the class who got 9.5. The rest mostly got over 9. There are a few students who got 8.75,” Ms. Huyen shared the class’s achievements.
