Earning hundreds of millions thanks to the "trend" of selling frangipani hair clips

After a student wore a frangipani flower hair clip to class and received many compliments on how beautiful it looked, last week, Ngoc Anh and her colleagues teaching at a tutoring center in District 7 ( Ho Chi Minh City) were given this type of hair clip as gifts by their boss.

"These hair clips are very pretty, and you can choose the color you like. The boss bought them as gifts for the employees so that both teachers and students can wear them. The clips are also inexpensive, so it's easy to follow the 'trend'," Ms. Anh said.

Priced at around 10,000 VND each, frangipani flower hair clips have become a new trending item for online small business owners recently. Made of acrylic plastic, the clips are typically the same size as a real frangipani flower (6cm x 8cm), weigh 50 grams, and come in a variety of colors.

This trend is believed to have originated from a design by the American hair clip brand Emi Jay. Many manufacturers have copied it, and it has been widely promoted by users on social media.

According to data from YouNet Media's social media listening platform SocialHeat, over the past two months, the frangipani flower clip has attracted more than 123,700 discussions and 2.3 million interactions from over 83,200 TikTok and Facebook users.

Over the past two months, the top 10 shops on TikTok Shop have sold 88,200 frangipani flower hair clips, generating nearly 1.2 billion VND in revenue, according to statistics from e-commerce data company YouNet ECI.

On Shopee, 10 shops earned 13.4 billion VND from selling 834,000 porcelain flower hair clips. Top shops can earn hundreds of millions of VND from this item. For example, on TikTok Shop, the shop that sold the most sold over 40,000 clips, earning over 595 million VND in two months. The same shop on Shopee earned 380 million VND.

Ms. Anh Thu, who sells frangipani flower hair clips in Tan Phu District (Ho Chi Minh City), said that this is not a new product, but it has become popular thanks to a trend on social media, with new designs constantly being released. "Older designs cost around 5,000-8,000 VND, while newer designs can cost over 20,000 VND each," Ms. Thu said. The most popular designs are the transparent or mirror-coated holographic frangipani flowers, which originate from China.

According to Mr. Nguyen Phuong Lam, Director of Market Analysis at YouNet ECI, the cases of businesses earning hundreds of millions of VND are due to stores being quick to grasp trends from the moment the product becomes popular on social media.

"Brands that can capitalize on shopping discussion trends as soon as they emerge will have a significant advantage when selling online," Mr. Lam observed.

Furthermore, stores that invest in sales channels and video content have greater business opportunities. For example, the best-selling TikTok shop has built its channel a long time ago with over 50,000 followers and regularly updates videos about its products. In the past two months, they have posted 95 videos about porcelain flower hair clips, averaging two product videos per day. Clips updating product colors or "unboxing" also attract considerable attention, with some having over 500,000 views.

According to Ms. Thu, unlike other fleeting business trends, the frangipani flower hair clip is expected to have a longer lifespan, possibly up to 6 months.

"This item is useful; after frangipani, there are orchids, and we don't know what other designs will come out. Some shops even use clips to create bouquets for gifts or decorations," she said.
