Retail e-commerce is projected to surpass $25 billion and continue to be a major pillar of the internet economy . In the third quarter of this year, total sales on the four largest e-commerce platforms in Vietnam reached VND 103.6 trillion, a 2.6% increase compared to the previous quarter. Businesses are encouraged to improve operational capabilities, optimize logistics chains, and standardize data to increase transparency and management efficiency.
This year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has finalized two foundational documents: the National E-commerce Development Master Plan for the period 2026-2030 with a pioneering, green, and inclusive orientation; and the Draft Law on E-commerce, which includes policies on classifying platform models, managing cross-border entities, foreign investment, e-commerce support services, and a legal framework for electronic contracts.
Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade - Mr. Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan commented that in the context of the world economy maintaining growth, with the driving force coming from services, digital consumption and innovation, Vietnam's digital economy is continuing to improve significantly, becoming a new pillar to help improve productivity, expand markets and increase the resilience of the economy.
“Retail e-commerce is forecast to exceed the 25 billion USD mark and continue to be the main pillar of the Internet economy. The Government has identified 2025 as the year to accelerate the implementation of Resolution 57 on digital transformation, with a consistent view that it is an important driving force to develop the productive forces and enhance national competitiveness. The Industry and Trade sector has promoted digital transformation on all three pillars: Digital Government; digital economy of the Industry and Trade sector and data infrastructure. However, 2025 requires the industry to innovate more strongly and comprehensively to take advantage of opportunities from dual transformation - digital transformation and green transformation,” Deputy Minister Tan wished.
For the Vietnamese e-commerce market to develop sustainably, businesses need to simultaneously improve operational capacity, optimize logistics chains, and standardize data to increase transparency and management efficiency. Compliance with environmental standards and emission reduction in e-commerce activities are identified as increasingly important requirements in the 2025-2030 period.
Furthermore, there is a need to support small businesses and household enterprises, and to strengthen regional linkages, creating conditions for entities in the e-commerce ecosystem to access development opportunities equally. This will build a transparent, secure, and highly competitive e-commerce market, in line with the sustainable development orientation of Vietnam's digital economy.
