A memorial bas-relief dedicated to the late Senator John McCain, located on the shores of Truc Bach Lake in Hanoi, depicts McCain, the American pilot whose plane was shot down on October 26, 1967, while bombing North Vietnam, and who had to parachute into the lake. After more than five years in Hoa Lo Prison, McCain was released under the Paris Agreement in 1973.
During his six decades of service to the United States, Senator McCain spent three decades fostering relations with Vietnam, making a crucial contribution to the normalization of relations between the two countries.
After returning to the United States, Senator McCain returned to Vietnam several times, visiting the memorial commemorating the event where he and his plane were shot down by Vietnamese forces. Senator McCain passed away on August 25, 2018, from brain cancer. (Photo: Phuong Uyen).
