US President Donald Trump has suggested that he may nominate top economic adviser Kevin Hassett to replace Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell in 2026.
At an earlier cabinet meeting, President Trump said he would announce his pick for the new Fed chairman in early 2026.
Mr. Hassett, a PhD economist, served as Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers during President Trump’s first term. He currently heads the National Economic Council (NEC), a White House agency that advises the President and Cabinet on policy issues. He also regularly appears on television to support the President’s policies.
Mr. Hassett’s loyalty to President Trump could pave the way for his nomination to be Fed chairman. However, it will also be a major topic of debate in political and financial circles, as he needs confirmation from the Republican-controlled Senate. Mr. Hassett will have to convince senators and markets that he can protect the independence of the central bank and will not let inflation in the world’s largest economy get out of control.
