Writer Joshua Zukas posed that rather exaggerated question in a recent article published on the Michelin Guide website.
According to him, "even though the high-end culinary scene is thriving, street food still dominates in Vietnam's largest city. There's no way to know how many street food stalls and restaurants there are in this chaotic megacity with 24 districts and 10 million people."
He shared his experience of a two-day street food tour in Ho Chi Minh City.

First day
Joshua Zukas presents a two-day culinary tour starting in District 1. There, in the morning, you can enjoy a steaming bowl of pho at Pho Minh restaurant – an establishment included in this year's Bib Gourmand list.
When you come here to eat pho, remember to order a lesser-known specialty: the grilled pate chaud pastry. Since the restaurant only sells in the mornings and often runs out of stock early, this writer recommends arriving as early as possible.

Around lunchtime, after visiting the Ho Chi Minh City Museum, Nguyen Hue pedestrian street, the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Ho Chi Minh City Post Office , and feeling hungry, you can stop by Number One Chicken Sticky Rice near Ben Thanh Market.
The article in the Michelin Guide says sticky rice is a very delicious Vietnamese dish. This sticky rice stall offers two types: chicken sticky rice and sweet corn sticky rice.
After eating sticky rice, you can stop by a nearby cafe to enjoy a cup of iced Vietnamese milk coffee.
If you enjoy art, you can also visit the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts before dinner.

In the evening, you can visit Bếp Mẹ Ỉn on Le Thanh Ton Street. This small eatery is on the Michelin Guide 2024 Bib Gourmand list, yet still sells street food at affordable prices. Their signature dish is banh xeo (Vietnamese savory pancake). You can also order stir-fried water spinach, braised chicken, and white rice.

If you're hungry, you can visit Ba Ghiền broken rice restaurant - the only broken rice restaurant and the Bib Gourmand location in 2024.
At lunchtime, Cô Liêng restaurant, established in 1995, is a great place to visit. They serve delicious beef wrapped in betel leaves. They also offer grilled pork, spring rolls, boiled pig ears, and more.

By evening, District 3 truly becomes the trendy neighborhood of Ho Chi Minh City. Stepping into the narrow alleys surrounding Co Lieng Street, you'll find countless cafes and juice bars.
When you're ready for dinner, head to Hong Phat noodle shop. There are also other options like fried rice, pate chaud, and various pastries…
