Ho Chi Minh City: Vocational Education and Continuing Education Centers struggle to enroll students

(NLDO) - Up to this point, only a few vocational education centers and vocational schools in Ho Chi Minh City are enrolling 10th graders at a moderate rate, the rest are still struggling.

On the afternoon of July 2, Mr. Luu Thanh Tong, Director of Phu Tho Hoa Continuing Education Center (Phu Tho Hoa Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), said that it is expected that today the center will recruit enough 360 students for grade 10 for the 2025-2026 school year.

According to Mr. Tong, in the previous school year, the enrollment target was 640 students, and the center only recruited for a few days to fill the application. In 2025, enrollment will be more difficult, the target will be reduced to 360 students and the enrollment period will also be longer.

"The quota has decreased for many objective reasons such as the number of students failing public high schools has decreased significantly, there are no guest teachers... However, the center does not consider mass recruitment, on the contrary, the recruitment process is more strict than previous years. Specifically, students must have at least 3 years of good conduct in junior high school, and 4 years of average or higher academic performance in junior high school" - Mr. Tong informed.

Parents submit their children's admission application to Bay Hien Continuing Education Center

Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Nhai, Deputy Director of Bay Hien Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center (Bay Hien Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), said that lowering enrollment targets is a common situation of many centers to adapt to the actual situation. The center started receiving enrollment applications from July 1, enrolling 564 students and will study entirely according to the 2018 General Education Program.

"After completing 3 years of high school, students will be able to take the high school graduation exam like all other high school students, receive a high school diploma and continue studying the majors at the university or college they desire. In the 2023-2024 school year, the center has a high school graduation rate of 99.07%," said Ms. Nhai.

At a vocational training center in An Hoi Dong ward, although it opened the portal to receive applications since early June, it has only recruited about 20% of its target. Compared to last year, the number of students coming to register for admission is very low. The center is still accepting applications until the end of July.

After the 10th grade exam results were released, Ly Tu Trong College (Tan Son Nhat Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) had about 450 applications for admission, but this number is still quite limited compared to the target of 3,000 students.

At Ly Tu Trong College, the intermediate level for junior high school graduates will study for 4 years (including cultural studies and vocational training). The deadline for receiving admission applications is September 30.

According to Dr. Chau Van Bao, Vice Principal of Ly Tu Trong College, the main reason for the difficulty in recruiting students at vocational training centers and vocational schools is the large number of students entering public high schools. "Ho Chi Minh City has nearly 80 public high schools, the standard score has decreased sharply compared to last year, while only about 6,000 students failed the public 10th grade and chose another path," Mr. Bao added.
