(CLO) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that powerful nations should not bully weaker countries, while reaffirming Beijing's commitment to upholding the multilateral system and protecting developing nations.
This statement was made at a foreign policy conference in Beijing on Friday.
Mr. Wang argued that in the context of an increasingly unstable world , the United Nations needs to maintain its central position in the global governance system. China is committed to playing a pivotal role in this system and speaking out in defense of the rights of countries in the Southern Hemisphere.
According to him, maintaining the principle of sovereign equality is a prerequisite for preventing the return of "the law of the jungle" in international relations.

China has also taken a firm stance against US pressure, particularly regarding tariffs and the fentanyl issue. Premier Wang Yi criticized the US imposition of additional tariffs on Chinese goods, asserting that China will not accept unreasonable pressure.
He emphasized that some countries are trying to use their power to impose their will on others, but China will not let that happen.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Wang Yi reaffirmed China's stance on promoting a "fair, lasting, and binding peace agreement" that is acceptable to all parties.
Meanwhile, the shift in US foreign policy under President Donald Trump is also a topic of interest. The Trump administration withdrew from many multilateral organizations, reduced foreign aid, and adopted a more conciliatory stance toward Russia.
Mr. Wang urged developing countries to improve their representation in international organizations, while warning that if major powers pursue only their own interests and disregard international law, the world will descend into chaos.
"Great powers should not pursue profit and should not bully the weak," he emphasized.
Amidst the changing landscape of U.S. foreign policy, China seeks to demonstrate its stability, willingness to cooperate, and commitment to promoting a fairer international system.
