AFP news agency reported on March 15 that Pope Francis receives thousands of letters every day from all over the world , while he gradually recovers at a hospital in Rome (Italy) from pneumonia.

Pope Francis (89 years old) has been in hospital for a month as of March 14. Doctors at Gemelli Hospital said his condition has stabilized and he is slowly recovering from a serious period with life-threatening respiratory failure.

According to a statement from the Italian Postal Service, many people sent letters to the city's post office "since the pope's hospitalization until today".

The head of the Italian Postal Service's Fiumicino distribution center Antonello Chidichimo said a "skyrocketing" amount of mail had been recorded at the center, reaching 150 kg of letters per day.

"These days, the flow of letters and messages sent to Pope Francis has been particularly intense, expressing the affection and closeness of the international community," the statement said.

In a bit of self-promotion, the post office said it was playing a "fundamental role... in ensuring every message of support and prayer gets to its destination".

The Vatican has yet to announce when Pope Francis might be discharged from the hospital, where he is being treated in the papal suite on the 10th floor.

The Vatican said on March 14 that the pope was “stable” after a “peaceful night,” but did not release a medical bulletin in the evening as planned. The press office later said there was “no major news to report.”

On the 12th anniversary of his papacy on March 14, Pope Francis' favorite soccer team, San Lorenzo in his hometown of Buenos Aires, Argentina, posted a video message of support, along with others from Brazilian soccer star Neymar and former Italian player and coach Ciro Ferrara.

The Argentine Pope thanked those who sent letters and prayers, noting their "affection and closeness".
