Billionaire Bill Gate predicts AI will 'kill' online shopping and search platforms

Billionaire Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft Corporation, said on May 22 that the winner of the technology race will be a computer assistant using the best artificial intelligence (AI), capable of beating online shopping platforms and search engines.

The tech billionaire made the above statement in a speech at the AI Forward 2023 conference organized by Goldman Sachs and SV Angel in San Francisco, USA. Mr. Bill Gates affirmed that with the development of AI, users will no longer need to use online search platforms or go to Amazon to shop.

Billionaire Bill Gates said he was pleased that Microsoft had joined the race, although the opportunities were being divided equally between the leading technology company and emerging startups.

Up to now, Amazon, Google and Microsoft have not commented on billionaire Bill Gates' statement.

In addition, Mr. Bill Gates expressed his impression of the startup company Inflection AI, co-founded by entrepreneur Reid Hoffman. He said that currently there are many companies racing to build an AI-powered computer assistant that customers can control by voice or text.

Also related to AI, Intel Corporation on May 22 announced some new details about the AI chip that it plans to introduce in 2025 in the context that the corporation is adjusting its strategy to compete with other chip manufacturers Nvidia and AMD.

At a supercomputing conference in Germany, Intel said its upcoming “Falcon Shores” chip will have 288 gigabytes of memory and support 8-bit floating-point calculations. Those specs are important because AI models like the ChatGPT service are exploding in size and businesses are looking for more powerful chips to run them.

The specifications are part of Intel's push to adjust its strategy to catch up with Nvidia - the market leader in AI chips - and AMD - which is challenging Nvidia's position with its MI300 chip.

Intel currently has no market share in the AI chip sector because the Ponte Vecchio chip it planned to produce to compete with Nvidia was delayed for many years.

Intel also said at the tech event that it has nearly completed shipments to the US Argonne National Laboratory to build the Aurora supercomputer based on the Ponte Vecchio chip, which Intel claims outperforms Nvidia's latest H100 AI chip. However, Intel's next chip, Falcon Shores, won't hit the market until 2025, when Nvidia may release a different chip.

Intel's Jeff McVeigh said the company is taking its time reworking chips after abandoning its previous strategy of combining graphics processing units (GPUs) with central processing units (CPUs). "While we want to have the best CPU and GPU on the market, it's hard to say that one vendor has the best combination of them at any given time," McVeigh explained.
