According to Sputnik news agency, Hungarian Defense Minister Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky stated on social media on November 20: "To be ready to deal with whatever may happen, I have ordered the installation of new air surveillance and air defense systems with accompanying capabilities in the Northeast."
With these capabilities, Hungary can improve the accuracy of its detection systems in airspace control and reduce the time required for a response.
According to Szalay-Bobrovniczky, this measure was taken after Ukraine was allowed to use Western weapons to attack deep into Russian territory and Moscow revised its nuclear doctrine.
At the same time, Budapest "maintains its position that peace should be achieved through diplomatic means rather than military solutions."
Earlier that day, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban convened the country's defense council after Kyiv was authorized to use Western long-range weapons to attack Russian territory and Moscow updated its nuclear doctrine.
According to him, the risk of escalation has increased to its maximum level, and Hungary needs all its diplomatic experience and resources to avoid being drawn into the conflict in Ukraine, even in the future.
Also on November 20, Bloomberg News, citing an unnamed Western official, reported that Ukraine had for the first time launched the British-made Storm Shadow long-range missile into Russian territory.
The Times (UK), citing sources from Russian social media, reported that 12 Storm Shadow missiles were fired at the Kursk region on the Russian border. These sources published numerous images showing metal fragments in the village of Marino, Kursk, with the words "Storm Shadow" written on them.
A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that his office would not comment on these reports.
