According to the BBC, Gino Mader collided with Magnus Sheffield of the Ineos Grenadiers team while both were descending the Albula pass. Gino Mader plunged into a ravine and lay motionless at the scene. Immediately after the collision, the organizers of the 2023 Tour de Suisse had to deploy a helicopter to take Gino Mader to the hospital. Fortunately, after receiving emergency treatment, he regained consciousness a few hours later. Meanwhile, Magnus Sheffield suffered fairly serious head injuries and bruises on his arms and legs. He also had to withdraw from the race and was taken to the hospital by helicopter for observation.
Medical personnel arrived at the scene after the collision.
Following the conclusion of stage 5 of the 2023 Tour de Suisse, the Bahrain team Victorious shared an update on Gino Mader's condition. They stated that Mader had veered off the track while descending the mountain pass and lost control of his speed, which exacerbated the severity of the collision with Magnus Sheffield.
The Bahrain Victorious racing team announced: “Gino Mader fell into a ravine after veering off the track. When paramedics arrived, Gino Mader was unresponsive. He received emergency treatment at the scene and was then airlifted to the hospital. We will provide an update on the exact consequences of the accident once Gino Mader has undergone a thorough examination.”
Helicopters were dispatched to the scene of the collision.
Following the incident, many famous figures in the world of cycling sent words of encouragement to Gino Mader. At the same time, they also reminded athletes to be more careful when participating in mountain climbing stages.
World champion Remco Evenepoel even criticized the organizers of the 2023 Tour de Suisse. He shared on Twitter: “I hope everyone involved in the crash is okay. I hope that today’s incident is something to think about for both the organizers and us as riders.”
While finishing a stage as challenging as this is the dream of many riders, having riders complete a dangerous downhill section is not the right decision. As riders, we should also consider the risks we face when descending the mountain.”
