Vietnam joins the international community in calling for the early entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

On September 3, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York (USA), the United Nations General Assembly held a High-Level Plenary Debate to commemorate the International Day Against Nuclear Tests (August 29) under the chairmanship of President of the 79th General Assembly Philemon Yang.

Attending and speaking at the session were the UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu; the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO); representatives from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); and numerous representatives from UN member states.

In his opening remarks, the UN Deputy Secretary-General emphasized that, 80 years after the first atomic tests and bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, humanity still faces the imminent threat of further testing of these weapons of mass destruction. He also affirmed that ending nuclear testing is a shared responsibility to ensure international peace and security.

As the world prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) opening for signature, the CTBTO Secretary-General and representatives of many countries called on all countries that have not yet signed or ratified the CTBT to urgently complete this process.

Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, spoke at the meeting.

Speaking at the session, Minister Counselor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, reaffirmed Vietnam's firm and consistent stance in supporting all disarmament efforts, combating nuclear proliferation, and ensuring the right of states to use atomic energy for peaceful purposes.

On this occasion, the Vietnamese representative emphasized the significance of the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and called on all countries to actively contribute to strengthening this process.

Vietnam and ASEAN countries simultaneously called for support from United Nations member states for the implementation of the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ), considering this an important contribution to efforts to promote regional and international peace and security.
