Vietnam is the second largest supplier of whitefish to the US.

VASEP said that thanks to pangasius, Vietnam will become the second largest supplier of white fish to the US by 2023.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the US last year reached US$271 million, down by half compared to the same period last year. Despite the sharp decline, the US is still the second largest consumer market for Vietnamese pangasius, after China (including Hong Kong).

In addition, according to data from the International Trade Center (ITC), in the first 10 months of 2023, the US imported more than 1.4 billion USD of whitefish from the world, mainly frozen fillet products. Of which, the amount imported from Vietnam accounted for 19% of the market share, becoming the second largest supplier of whitefish (mainly pangasius) to the US, after China (accounting for 45%).

According to VASEP, the export value of Vietnamese pangasius to the US has gradually improved in the last month of last year, helping to partly offset the decline that occurred before. Specifically, in December 2023, the US recorded positive growth in Vietnamese pangasius imports for the first time, with turnover reaching nearly 20 million USD, up 20%. Previously, the export value decreased by 22-81% in 11 months.

Looking to 2024, VASEP said there are some positive signs as the US economy shows many signs of recovery and growth. Inflation has decreased, unemployment is lower, incomes are catching up and exceeding inflation, helping consumer spending to be more comfortable than in the volatile year of 2023.
