On October 28, Thai media reported that Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkoew met with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung on the sidelines of the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit to discuss measures to promote bilateral relations, in which the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

According to a VNA reporter in Bangkok, Minister Sihasak said the two sides agreed to accelerate the implementation of the action plan for the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and ensure that cooperation between the two countries is always future-oriented and in line with ASEAN's common goals.

He said both sides were also exploring opportunities for deeper economic cooperation, particularly in the renewable energy sector. Thai investors have shown increasing interest in Vietnam’s solar and wind power sectors, where technological advances have significantly reduced costs. In response, Vietnam has agreed to review its pricing structure to attract more Thai investment.

Banking cooperation was another important topic of discussion, with Vietnam expressing its desire to allow Thai banks to operate as full-service financial institutions, a move that Minister Sihasak described as “key” to expanding private sector investment, according to Thai media.

On regional development, Minister Sihasak stressed the importance of leadership from the Mekong countries – Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia – in shaping the future of the region. While acknowledging the role of external partners such as China, Japan, South Korea and India in developing the region, Mr Sihasak stressed that the countries in the region must lead the process.

According to Sihasak, Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung congratulated Thailand and Cambodia on the recent peace deal to ease border tensions, saying it would benefit ASEAN. The Thai foreign minister added that both countries have begun implementing the peace deal, with Cambodia gradually withdrawing heavy weapons from the border. Once completed, Bangkok will repatriate prisoners of war and work to restore relations with Phnom Penh.
