The event is expected to open a new chapter in maritime cooperation between Vietnam and the Nordic region, contributing to promoting global trade connectivity.

Tallinn, Estonia – Under the witness of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh , on the afternoon of June 5 (local time), Mr. Nguyen Canh Tinh – General Director of Vietnam National Shipping Lines (VIMC) – and Mr. Rene Path – Member of the Board of Directors, Business Development Director of Tallinn Port, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on strategic cooperation between the two sides.

The Memorandum of Understanding demonstrates the common determination of two leading enterprises in the maritime sector in Vietnam and Estonia, towards cooperation in the field of seaport management and exploitation, focusing on research and cooperation in developing green ports and smart ports towards the goal of promoting environmental protection and innovation.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh witnessed the Vietnam National Shipping Lines (VIMC) discussing and signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation in transferring smart port operation technology with the Port of Talinn.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, VIMC leaders said: “Tallinn Port is one of the pioneers in the Baltic region in developing green ports and exploiting smart shipping. The cooperation between the two sides will not only promote technological innovation in Vietnam’s logistics industry but also help raise VIMC’s position on the international shipping map.”

The Port of Tallinn, which manages Estonia’s four largest port clusters – Muuga and Paldiski South cargo ports, as well as Old City and Saaremaa passenger ports – is focusing on smart infrastructure, clean energy and the expansion of the port industrial park. With a total cargo throughput of around 20 million tonnes per year, Tallinn plays a central role in the Nordic region and is one of the leading ports in sustainable development.

According to the agreement, Vietnam National Shipping Lines and the Port of Tallinn will cooperate in researching and implementing modern, green and sustainable port management and exploitation models. Specifically, the two sides agreed to explore the possibility of applying digital technology, artificial intelligence, and automation in port operations; promoting clean energy transition and building environmentally friendly infrastructure systems. At the same time, cooperation activities also focus on sharing experiences in planning and operating smart ports, developing digital logistics and building green standards according to global trends.

The Port of Tallinn is currently the largest seaport complex in Estonia, with four main ports: Old City, Saaremaa, Muuga and Paldiski South. Of these, Muuga – Estonia’s largest cargo port – handles 20 million tonnes of cargo per year and is a hub for receiving containers, liquid, dry bulk and general cargo. In addition, Paldiski South has great potential with modern infrastructure, suitable for Ro-Ro cargo operations – an area that VIMC is promoting in its multimodal transport development strategy.

In recent years, VIMC has continuously expanded international cooperation, aiming to build transcontinental logistics chains and enhance its role as a regional transit hub.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s working trip to Estonia this time aims to promote comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and the Nordic countries, especially in the fields of digital transformation, energy, education and strategic infrastructure. During the visit, Vietnamese enterprises had many meetings and signed important cooperation agreements with local partners, clearly demonstrating the proactive, comprehensive and substantive economic diplomacy policy orientation of the Vietnamese Government.

The agreement between VIMC and the Port of Tallinn is a testament to the shared vision and future of two leading enterprises in the maritime sector, opening up expectations for an effective logistics corridor connecting Southeast Asia with the Baltic - Northern Europe, in the context of global transport strongly transforming towards green, digital and sustainable.
