"Failed" when registering for dormitory at Hanoi University of Science and Technology

Báo Kinh tế và Đô thịBáo Kinh tế và Đô thị28/08/2024

Candidates and parents are upset

At 5am (August 28), at the dormitory gate of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, there were hundreds of people lining up to register for dormitory accommodation. Many people said that they had been there since 3-4am to queue, hoping to register for a dormitory accommodation for their children. At 6am, the number of people poured in, getting bigger and bigger. Until after 7am, the chaotic scene, jostling each other was really scary, everyone wanted to rush to the counter to register.

Reflecting to the reporter of Kinh te & Do thi Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van H., a parent whose child has just been admitted to Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that he and his son came from the countryside to Hanoi, the family is very worried and wants to register for a dormitory for peace of mind. "This morning, I took my child to school very early to register for the dormitory but was very disappointed with the way the school welcomed and handled the procedures" - Mr. H. said.

Mr. H. said that the school was scheduled to open at 7:30, and when he and his father arrived at 6:00, there were already hundreds of people waiting. It turned out that many people were impatient and wanted to complete the procedures early, so they arrived between 3 and 4:00 a.m. They thought that whoever arrived early would be processed first, but when the staff started working, the atmosphere became chaotic, and those who arrived later rushed forward. Moreover, no staff came out to guide or explain.

As one of the new students who came to register for dormitory procedures, NTL expressed: "Usually, I see that most schools have youth volunteers or a department to carefully guide new students on the first day of school. However, today, when registering for dormitory accommodation, I did not see any green volunteer shirts. We have many questions but do not know who to ask and feel that we are not cared about...".

Tran Van K. (from Thai Binh ) said: "I didn't think that in a top university in the country, the organization would be so unscientific and chaotic. There wasn't even a loudspeaker to broadcast an announcement to explain to parents and students and to maintain order. Just letting parents push, jostle, and complain like that, it's really sad."

On social networks, in a group of new students of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, many questions and comments about the status of dormitory registration procedures were also shared and updated this morning. Many new students said that they and their parents were very dissatisfied and disagreed with the way the dormitory application reception department worked. "Before even starting school, I saw that the school had lost points" - one student commented.

However, some students also said that the school had announced and given very specific and clear instructions in advance; even established a Zalo group to answer questions. The problem is probably because new students do not read and update information, which is why such a situation occurs. But the situation of jostling, chaos, and unscientific reception behind the university gate is unacceptable.

Previously, many new students also said that they could not register for the dormitory online as instructed because the school’s internet was “down all day”, making it impossible to register. Only a few students out of thousands of students who wanted to stay in the dormitory successfully registered.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology explains

Talking to a reporter from Kinh te & Do thi Newspaper about the above incident, Director of Communications and Digital Knowledge (Hanoi University of Science and Technology) Dinh Van Hai said: "We received information about the incident and went directly down to check."

“This year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has reserved more than 1,000 places for new students in the dormitory. Previously, the school opened an online registration portal and received registrations from about 500 students. The rest of the students will register directly when they come to the school to complete admission procedures.”

This year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology reserved more than 1,000 dormitory spaces for new students, while 3,000 - 4,000 students wanted to register.

The school has made a specific announcement about the conditions for staying in the dormitory so that students and parents are aware. The dormitory gives priority to policy beneficiaries, including: children of war invalids, martyrs, sick soldiers, people affected by toxic chemicals; students from remote areas, border areas, islands, ethnic minorities; students with difficult circumstances. After arranging places for the above-mentioned subjects, if there are still spaces in the dormitory, the school will receive and consider the applications of the remaining students (female students, students from other provinces).

According to Mr. Dinh Van Hai, this year the demand for dormitories is much higher than in previous years. Preliminary statistics show that the number of students wishing to stay in the dormitories of the University of Technology is up to 3,000-4,000, including many students whose houses are not too far from the school.

Many parents and students expressed disappointment with the reception of the University of Technology.

"Maybe because the supply of mini apartments in Hanoi has decreased or the price of rooms has increased, making it more difficult to find rooms, so students want to stay in the school dormitories for convenience in commuting and studying," said Mr. Dinh Van Hai.

Although we understand, share and sympathize with the legitimate needs of new students, due to the limited facilities and dormitory accommodation capacity of the school, we cannot fully meet the wishes of the students.

“The school announced that it would start accepting dormitory registrations and working at 7:30 this morning, but many candidates and their families arrived very early. At first, they lined up in an orderly manner, but later, the number of people increased, leading to a lack of order and chaos. This is something we do not want...” - Mr. Dinh Van Hai explained.

This afternoon, the department receiving application documents at the dormitory reviewed, processed and arranged seats for policy beneficiaries in accordance with the announcement and the school's actual supply capacity.

Mr. Hai also said that to support new students in solving the problem of dormitory accommodation, the school has contacted Phap Van - Tu Hiep dormitory and shared this information with students so that they can learn and register if needed.

It is worth mentioning that the school is very aware of the large number of students who want to register for the dormitory. However, the chaos that happened this morning was due to the lack of scientific, professional, and open-minded organization of the school's reception. Hopefully, parents and students will not witness any more "disruption" in the school's next activities.
