According to the investigation results from the Provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Department regarding the food poisoning incident at HUALIDA Garment Co., Ltd. in Thai Binh City, 46 people experienced symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea, with 17 people requiring hospitalization (from May 25-27, 2023). The suspected cause of the poisoning was microbial contamination of food during processing.
Representatives from the Provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Department met with HUALIDA Thai Binh Garment Co., Ltd. on the afternoon of May 26th.
Immediately after receiving information about the suspected food poisoning incident involving workers of HUALIDA Thai Binh Garment Co., Ltd., the Provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Department conducted an investigation and gathered information.
Investigations revealed that, to provide meals for its workers, HUALIDA Thai Binh Garment Co., Ltd. had contracted with three catering companies in Thai Binh city, including Sao Hom Catering and Service Co., Ltd. On May 25th, HUALIDA Thai Binh Garment Co., Ltd. provided meals for its workers as usual. That evening, HUALIDA Thai Binh Garment Co., Ltd. received information that two workers showed symptoms of food poisoning and were being treated at Lam Hoa Thai Binh General Hospital. On May 26th and 27th, the company received further information that 15 more workers showed signs of food poisoning and were being treated at the Provincial General Hospital, Lam Hoa Thai Binh General Hospital, and Vu Thu District General Hospital. In addition, the company also recorded 19 workers experiencing abdominal pain and bloating who sought medical attention at the company's infirmary. Those exhibiting symptoms of food poisoning all consumed meals provided by Sao Hom Catering and Service Co., Ltd. during their lunch break on May 25, 2023. The specific food item causing the poisoning could not be identified because Sao Hom Catering and Service Co., Ltd. disposed of the retained samples after the required 24-hour storage period.
By 5 PM on May 29th, all 17 patients being treated at the hospitals had stabilized, with no fatalities reported. The Provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Department will continue working with HUALIDA Thai Binh Garment Co., Ltd. and Sao Hom Catering and Service Co., Ltd. to review violations and handle administrative violations according to regulations; simultaneously, it will strengthen the dissemination of information on compliance with food safety laws, prevention of food poisoning, and timely reporting of any food poisoning incidents to businesses with collective kitchens in the province.
