Mr. Bao stands beside his family's orchard of 35 mangosteen trees, currently bearing delicious fruit, in Tan An hamlet, Cai Tac town, Chau Thanh A district, Hau Giang province.

Thanks to careful cultivation and investment, the mangosteen trees are thriving. Currently, 35 mangosteen trees have been yielding delicious fruit for over a month now.

Mr. Bao has harvested over 1 ton of mangosteen so far, with an average selling price at the farm ranging from 40,000 to 60,000 VND/kg, bringing in an income of over 60 million VND per year.

Mr. Bao said: "My family used to mainly grow sweet oranges, but after a long period of harvesting, the trees started to age and become infested with pests and diseases, so the yield was not high, and the prices were unstable. Therefore, we wanted to grow a type of tree that required less care and could be harvested for a long time..."

Mr. Bao researched and visited several large mangosteen orchards in Rach Ong (Dong Thanh commune, Chau Thanh district, Hau Giang province) and some neighboring localities.

He realized that the mangosteen variety was suitable for his family's garden soil. By early 2015, Mr. Bao had bought 35 mangosteen saplings and planted them on his 3000m2 garden land.

To make mangosteen farming profitable , Mr. Bao had to think long-term. In the early years, he intercropped various other plants such as Thai jackfruit and seedless lemons to maximize the use of the land and to generate income in the short term while waiting for the mangosteen trees to mature.

To ensure the mangosteen trees bear delicious fruit and can be harvested early, after each harvest, he starts fertilizing and adding mud to encourage vigorous growth before restricting watering.

Usually, around the beginning of August in the lunar calendar, after about two months of water scarcity, the bamboo shoots begin to flower.

From flowering to harvest, it takes about 6 months for a mangosteen tree to mature.

With 35 mangosteen trees that are 9 years old, this year marks the third harvest. Over the past month, Mr. Bao has harvested 1.2 tons of mangosteen.

The highest price for mangosteen reached 60,000 VND/kg, while the lowest price was still above 30,000 VND/kg.

According to Mr. Bao's assessment, this year his family's mangosteen orchard yielded more fruit than last year.

Mangosteen is mainly harvested in late April and begins to peak in early May according to the lunar calendar. The purchase price of mangosteen at the farm is around 50,000 VND/kg (similar to last year).

After the mangosteen harvest, Mr. Bao estimated that his family earned over 60 million VND, and after deducting expenses, they made a profit of over 40 million VND.

Mangosteen, considered the "Queen of Tropical Fruits," is a specialty fruit with a beautiful appearance, delicious and nutritious flesh, and is highly favored by consumers.

Currently, mangosteen is a crop that many farmers in Cai Tac town, Chau Thanh A district, Hau Giang province choose to grow to enrich their families, with an average profit of over 150 million VND/ha from mangosteen trees.
