The first gold medal for Vietnamese MMA at the 33rd SEA Games came in the men's modern 65kg category, with fighter Quang Van Minh competing against Tan Yee Siang (Malaysia). The Vietnamese fighter, born in 1999, showed superior form, defeating his Malaysian opponent with a technical KO victory before the third round.
This convincing victory marked the first gold medal for Vietnamese MMA in the history of the SEA Games. The Lion Championship 60 kg champion completely dominated his Indonesian opponent and won by points.
Thus, after two days of competition, Vietnamese MMA fighters have won a total of 2 Gold medals, 1 Silver medal, and 2 Bronze medals, exceeding the target set at the SEA Games 33 (only 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals).

To promptly encourage the outstanding MMA athletes, Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh, Head of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation, decided to award a "bonus" for each medal won by Vietnamese fighters at the SEA Games 33. Accordingly, athletes winning a Gold Medal will receive 10 million VND, those winning a Silver Medal will receive 5 million VND, and finally, those winning a Bronze Medal will receive 3 million VND.
