The success of Black Myth: Wukong comes from humanistic elements
According to GameRant , Beth Parker, acting director of Black Myth: Wukong, expressed a clear view on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the game industry at the BAFTA Breakthrough 2024 event. In an interview quoted by Niche Gamer, Parker said that AI cannot reproduce true human emotions in the process of character development and story in games.
“I can’t imagine using voice AI,” Parker stressed. “AI can simulate intonation, but it can never recreate the real emotion behind what it’s expressing.” She also explained that the human element, with its chaos, illogicality, and complex emotions, is the key to making game characters come alive and connect with players.
The game's creativity and detail emphasizes the artistic and emotional elements, something that AI can't do as well as humans.
Black Myth: Wukong , released in August 2024, is an action role-playing game developed by Game Science, inspired by the classic novel Journey to the West and the character Sun Wukong. The game has impressed the public with its beautiful graphics, innovative combat system and deep cultural transmission. Not only has it received many compliments, the game also won the Game of the Year award at the 2024 Golden Joystick Awards.
Parker insists that the entire development process of Black Myth: Wukong did not use any AI tools, nor does she intend to use this technology in the future. She emphasizes the importance of creating products that have value and the ability to truly connect with players, something she believes companies using AI are gradually losing.
Widespread consensus on the risks of AI in the creative sector
Criticism of AI in the gaming industry is not limited to game developers. Hirohiko Araki, author of the popular manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure , also recently expressed concerns about the increase in cheating that AI could bring. Meanwhile, Shigeru Miyamoto, Creative Director of Nintendo, affirmed that the Japanese publisher has no plans to apply AI to its projects. Miyamoto emphasized that Nintendo is committed to continuing to create valuable content that current technology cannot replace.
While many large companies still support the use of AI, opposition from reputable individuals and organizations shows deep concerns about the impact of this technology on the creative industry. Black Myth: Wukong , with its outstanding success and honoring human values in development, can become a strong demonstration of the view that Parker is pursuing.
