British Defence Minister Grant Shapps announced that the Kingdom plans to spend $514 million to modernize its Sea Viper air defense missile system.
This air defense system had previously been used by British forces to shoot down drones over the Red Sea, amid deteriorating tensions in the Middle East.
The Telegraph quoted Minister Shapps as saying: "As the situation in the Middle East worsens, it is crucial that we adapt to keep the UK, our allies and partners safe."
Secretary Shapps stated that the Sea Viper was the Navy's weapon of choice for eliminating an airborne threat for the first time in over 30 years.
The aforementioned contract was signed with the British missile manufacturer MBDA. The Sea Viper missile system will be upgraded with new missiles and software to counter ballistic missiles.
Earlier, on January 10, Mr. Shapps stated that a British destroyer operating in the Red Sea alongside US warships had repelled “the biggest attack” carried out by Houthi rebels in Yemen in the region.
