On October 25th, the seminar "Wood in Public Architecture: Traditional Materials and Solutions for the Future" opened a dialogue emphasizing the role of wood as a green, environmentally friendly architectural solution, contributing to shaping iconic buildings and sustainable urban spaces. The event was organized by Architecture Magazine in collaboration with Sunjin Vietnam and the Design Management Board of Sun Group Corporation at the Nguy Nhu Kon Tum Hall (Faculty of Science, University of Hanoi).

This event is part of the dialogue series "Understanding Wood - From Nature to Architecture," aiming to connect and share information about the applications of wood in public works, creating a global knowledge exchange forum while promoting local identity and delving into the applications of wood in modern architecture.
For centuries, wood has been a fundamental element of architecture. Now, in the context of global climate change, wood is increasingly recognized as a renewable material of the future, becoming a powerful source of inspiration for architects and creative designers. The seminar delved into exploring the potential and value of wood in public works, from traditional to modern.
At the event, architect Nicolas Medrano, Design Director of SKIDMORE, OWINGS & MERRILL (SOM) office in Hong Kong, shared valuable insights and practical experiences on sustainable designs using wood around the world. Mr. Medrano explained that wood is not only an environmentally friendly choice but also an effective low-carbon alternative to steel and concrete.
With its carbon-storing capabilities, wood significantly contributes to mitigating the environmental impact of construction projects. In particular, he emphasized, wood is a powerful medium for creating iconic public spaces, going far beyond its role as a conventional building material.

The seminar was organized with the aim of developing a professional community in creative design fields in Vietnam, especially architecture. The event not only created a forum for exchanging professional knowledge but also aimed to connect global knowledge with local development practices. With three core values – connection, knowledge, and Vietnamese pride – the seminar sought to build a strong creative community where everyone could learn, develop, and contribute to the progress of the Vietnamese design industry through the combination of theory, practice, and new trends.
Through sharing and dialogue, the seminar aims to help current architectural training institutions improve the quality of teaching, closely integrate research and architectural practice, and access advanced trends worldwide. This is also a valuable opportunity for the architectural community, especially young architects, to accumulate knowledge and experience in researching and designing public and high-rise buildings using wood materials, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the architecture and design industry in Vietnam.
