Oral injuries are common occurrences in daily life. Especially during the rainy season, getting to medical facilities can take longer than usual when injuries occur.
Here are some quick response measures in case a patient has a dental injury but cannot reach a medical facility in time:
Oral injuries are common in daily life.
Loose tooth: Use your fingertip to gently press and reposition the tooth. Do not force the tooth into the socket. Secure the tooth with a tissue or damp gauze. Contact your dentist as soon as possible for prompt treatment. You can call your dentist for guidance if you are able to reach them.
For chipped or broken teeth: place the chipped or broken piece of tooth in a damp cloth or bag with a few drops of water or saliva, as it may be reattachable. Rinse your mouth with warm water and keep it clean until you can see a dentist. The dentist may use the broken piece to attach to the remaining tooth, a very good restoration method that doesn't require other replacement materials.
If a tooth is knocked out of its socket: you should find the tooth, holding only the crown (the smooth, shiny part), avoiding the root (even when cleaning the tooth), and reinsert it into the socket immediately at the scene of the accident (if possible).
First, gently rinse the tooth with saline solution or even the patient's own saliva (do not use tap water). Gently insert the tooth into the socket.
If the tooth cannot be re-implanted, absolutely do not let it dry out; immediately soak it in saline solution or the patient's saliva.
Patients who have lost a tooth should bite down on a clean gauze or handkerchief at the site of the missing tooth. Then, contact a dentist as soon as possible so that the dentist can implant and secure the tooth. The optimal time to see a dentist is within 6 hours.
To ensure oral safety and health in case of accidents or injuries, it's advisable to have an emergency kit readily available.
An emergency kit includes: gauze and cotton to stop bleeding and protect injured areas in the mouth, a flashlight to help see inside the mouth, bottled water and salt for rinsing or saline solution for gargling, a pair of rubber gloves for examining wounds, painkillers, an immediate cold compress to treat swelling, and antibiotics as prescribed by a doctor.
