Promoting Vietnam-France cooperation on artificial intelligence and innovation in the medical field

On June 13, at ESCP Business School (Paris), a specialized workshop was held with the theme “Digital technology and artificial intelligence strategies for health: Experience and prospects for cooperation”. This event, organized by the Health Club of the Vietnamese Culture Honor Association in collaboration with ESCP, gathered many experts from France and Vietnam.

In her opening speech, Ms. Nguyen Duc Diane Thu Dung, Founding President of the Association for Honoring Vietnamese Culture (APCV), emphasized that the role of bridging culture and science has always been the “compass” of APCV in the past six years of establishment and development. The event took place in a special context when the relationship between the two countries has made many important strides, especially after the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Vietnam two weeks ago and the recent visit to France by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

For his part, Professor Pramuan Bunkanwanicha, Head of the ESCP School of Finance, emphasized: In recent years, the school has pioneered many initiatives related to Deep Technology, digital health and scientific entrepreneurship. These initiatives are implemented through cooperation with advanced ecosystems in France, Europe, Asia and many other regions.

Vietnamese Ambassador to France Dinh Toan Thang emphasized that digital healthcare and artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming a consistent factor in development policy and one of the important pillars in Vietnam's digital transformation strategy.

Vietnam is increasingly focusing on issues of promoting innovation and digital transformation, as well as ambitions to strengthen the country's science and technology capacity.

Ambassador Dinh Toan Thang said Vietnam wants to progress and learn in areas such as artificial intelligence, medical innovation and healthcare startups, especially from international experience.

France is an important partner in this field, with a globally recognized research environment, a constantly modernizing health system and an open spirit of cooperation.

According to Ambassador Dinh Toan Thang, in the context of the world facing many health challenges, the exchange of knowledge and experience is more necessary than ever, and scientific and technological cooperation is an essential lever to improve the health system for the benefit of the people.

On this occasion, the Ambassador highly appreciated the efforts and continuous commitment of the Association for Honoring Vietnamese Culture (APCV) in promoting cultural links and cooperation between France and Vietnam.

Speaking at the workshop, Professor Antoine Tesnière, Director General of the Center for Research, Training and Innovation in Digital Health (PariSanté Campus), presented the France 2030 program, with an investment of more than 7.5 billion euros from the state budget to promote three key areas: digital health, new infectious diseases and CBRN threats (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear), as well as biotherapy and production.

Professor Antoine Tesnière emphasized: AI is not just a tool, but is becoming a strategic, geopolitical factor, requiring a systematic and long-term approach.

The PariSanté Campus is home to more than 60 startups and six major research institutes, and is also a “launch pad” for technology transfer projects and startup support. Technologies being developed here include AI in diagnostic imaging, large language models (LLM) for medical record analysis, and ultrasound technology for depression treatment.

The General Director of PariSanté Campus expressed his willingness to cooperate with Vietnam in training, data sharing and developing a digital healthcare ecosystem.

At the bridge in Vietnam, Mr. Tran Quy Tuong, former Director of the Department of Information Technology (Ministry of Health) and currently Chairman of the Vietnam Digital Healthcare Association, shared a comprehensive picture of the digital transformation of the Vietnamese healthcare sector.

He affirmed: AI is no longer a futuristic concept, but is gradually reshaping the way public health is diagnosed, treated and managed.

Vietnam has issued many strategic policies such as Resolution 57 of the Politburo and Resolution 193 of the National Assembly to promote innovation and application of technology in healthcare.

However, Vietnam is still facing challenges such as lack of synchronous infrastructure, high-quality human resources and a legal framework that is still in the process of being completed. Therefore, Mr. Tran Quy Tuong emphasized the importance of international cooperation, especially with France, a country with an advanced healthcare ecosystem and a long-term artificial intelligence development strategy.

At the Vietnam-France Investment Promotion Seminar, French businesses believe that trade and investment cooperation between the two countries will be strongly promoted from President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Vietnam.

In the field of training, Professor Nguyen Viet Nhung, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), highlighted the role of AI in medical education, especially in the context of the healthcare sector facing the challenge of a shortage of 10 million healthcare workers globally by 2030.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Nhung said that although AI is a powerful tool to support personalization of research, clinical simulation and improve training quality, it cannot replace the human factor of a physician.

Vietnam National University, Hanoi is aiming to develop a national digital medical education platform, through its ongoing learning application experience called “Lecturio”, integrating AI to track learning progress and create personalized content.

On the healthcare side, Mr. Alexandre Drezet, Innovation Director of Foch Hospital (France), shared a comprehensive digitalization strategy with remote consultation and monitoring tools, in addition to a centralized data warehouse, to enhance the treatment efficiency of doctors.

On the business side, Dr. Tran Van Xuan, co-founder of Brain-Life company in the UK, introduced the application of brain-computer interface (BCI) and AI in monitoring and improving mental health.

Realizing that proactive mental care is an inevitable trend in modern society, Brain-Life is developing a BCI device priced at about 100 USD, suitable for the economic conditions of Vietnamese people, to detect stress and lack of concentration early and support intervention with meditation or mild electrical stimulation.

The proactive sharing of research experts, educators and businesses in this specialized workshop promises prospects for specific projects to be formed, bringing great opportunities for the health of people and communities in the two countries.
