14 deaths in 8 months
After many weeks of not providing specific information to the press about the development of infectious diseases in the country, in addition to updated figures on Covid-19 cases, this morning, August 30, the Ministry of Health had official information about the development of dengue fever and hand, foot and mouth disease in provinces and cities.
According to the results of monitoring infectious diseases in the country, dengue fever is on the rise in a number of provinces and cities.
Director of Hanoi Department of Health (white shirt) inspects, directs, and guides dengue fever prevention in residential areas in the capital.
From the beginning of the year to August 25, the whole country recorded 66,386 cases of dengue fever. Of the recorded cases of dengue fever, 14 patients died (Dong Nai 4 cases, Dak Lak 2 cases, Phu Yen 2 cases; the provinces and cities of Binh Phuoc, Binh Thuan, Ho Chi Minh City, Khanh Hoa, Kien Giang, Long An, each had 1 case).
Compared to the same period in 2022 (172,567 cases, 93 deaths), the number of dengue fever cases has decreased by 61.5%, and the number of deaths has decreased by 79 cases.
The number of dengue fever cases in the first 8 months of this year is concentrated in Hanoi (5,190 cases) and some provinces in the Central and Southern regions such as: Ho Chi Minh City 8,628 cases, An Giang 3,161 cases, Dong Nai 3,114 cases, Binh Duong 2,482 cases, Binh Thuan 3,118 cases, Soc Trang 2,481 cases.
According to the Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health), the dengue fever mortality rate nationwide in the first eight months of this year was 0.02% (lower than the dengue fever mortality rate of 0.03% during the 2016-2020 period). This figure is also significantly lower than other countries in the region (Timor Leste 1.2%; Indonesia 0.89%; Philippines 0.51%; Cambodia 0.2%; Laos 0.18%; Malaysia 0.06%) and falls within the target for reducing mortality set by the Prime Minister in the National Health and Population Program for the 2016-2020 period (equal to or lower than 0.09%).
Localities need to reserve enough medicine and chemicals for the treatment, prevention and control of dengue fever.
Provide adequate medicine to treat shock caused by dengue fever
To proactively implement epidemic prevention and control measures, not allowing the epidemic to break out, spread, and prolong, the Ministry of Health yesterday, August 29, issued Official Dispatch No. 5480/BYT-DP requesting the People's Committees of provinces and cities to pay attention to and direct the implementation of dengue fever prevention and control in the area.
Specifically, continue to direct localities to resolutely implement epidemic prevention and control measures according to documents previously sent by the Ministry of Health, in March, June and early August.
Notably, the Ministry of Health recommends that the core factor determining the supply of drugs is that units proactively place orders in advance with importing enterprises.
The People's Committees of provinces and cities are requested to strengthen their direction to preventive health facilities to ensure sufficient supplies of chemicals, biological products, materials, and equipment for disease prevention and control in their areas, especially chemicals for dengue fever and hand, foot, and mouth disease prevention and control, and chemical sprayers to thoroughly and effectively handle disease outbreaks.
Public and non-public medical examination and treatment facilities must ensure the availability of equipment, medicines, especially high molecular infusion solutions to serve the treatment and emergency care of dengue fever patients in order to minimize deaths.
With dextran infusion being a high molecular solution, used in the treatment of shock in patients with severe dengue fever, the Drug Administration of Vietnam (Ministry of Health) has licensed applications to import 17,010 bags.
Currently, 12,550 bags have arrived in Vietnam; of which, the number of drugs supplied to hospitals is 5,118 bags, the number of drugs remaining in the warehouse of the importing facility is 7,432 bags.
Thus, after a period of shortage, the Ministry of Health has now ensured a supply of dextran infusion solution.
