According to Mr. Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development , in 2024, the agricultural sector faced many major challenges from climate change, natural disasters, and market fluctuations. However, with the decisive leadership of the Party and Government, along with the efforts of all levels, sectors, farmers, and businesses, the agricultural sector achieved significant accomplishments.
Despite facing drought, storms, saltwater intrusion, and the negative impacts of Typhoon No. 3, the agricultural sector has ensured national food security while boosting agricultural exports and setting many new records. This affirms the crucial role of agriculture in driving the country's economy.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2024, the total production value (GO) of the whole industry will reach an estimated growth rate of 3.3%, the forest coverage rate will reach 42.02%; the rate of communes meeting new rural standards will reach 78.7%; the rate of rural households using clean water meeting standards will reach 58%.
Total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reached a record high of 62.5 billion USD, up 18.7% compared to 2023; trade surplus continued to reach a new record of 17.9 billion USD, up 46.8%.
Mr. Phung Duc Tien stated that, despite challenges from extreme weather and unexpected events, the industry has proactively adapted and achieved its growth targets.
The structure of agricultural production continues to improve, moving towards high value-added and market-competitive products. The productivity and output of many crops and livestock have increased compared to the previous year. In particular, the application of scientific and technological advancements, mechanization, and modern agricultural models has contributed to improved productivity and product quality.
Despite being severely affected by storms and floods, the sector quickly overcame the consequences, supporting people in stabilizing their lives and restoring production. At the same time, government support policies created favorable conditions for farmers to transform their production structure, increase product value, and expand markets.
The results achieved demonstrate a positive shift in farmers' production mindset, moving towards a modern, sustainable, and efficient agricultural system. The strengthened links between production and consumption, along with the development of agricultural enterprises and cooperatives, have contributed to enhancing the position of Vietnamese agricultural products in the international market.
Towards high-value agriculture
In 2025, the agricultural sector will focus all resources on achieving breakthroughs and successfully fulfilling the goals set out in the Resolution of the 13th National Congress and Resolution No. 5 of the Central Committee (13th term). The focus will be on a strong transformation from agricultural production to agricultural economy, building green and sustainable agriculture.
In the coming time, according to Mr. Tien, the agricultural sector will focus on removing difficulties, making the most of opportunities from free trade agreements, boosting exports, and increasing added value for products. Some specific targets include GDP growth reaching 3.3 - 3.4%; agricultural exports reaching 64 - 65 billion USD, forest cover remaining stable at 42.02% and 60% of rural households having access to clean water.
To achieve the set goals, the entire agricultural sector will focus on implementing key tasks in a coordinated manner, such as continuing to restructure the industry, improving productivity, product quality, and production and business efficiency. It will also promote innovation, apply high-tech and clean technologies to production, aiming to increase the added value of agricultural products.
Expanding the domestic and international agricultural product consumption market. Building and perfecting the value chain of agricultural products, closely connecting with the modern logistics system.
The agricultural sector innovates production organization by developing forms of cooperation, linking production and consumption along the value chain, creating effective and sustainable production models.
Investing in improving the quality of human resources in agriculture, training them in modern skills, and meeting the requirements of high-tech agriculture.
According to Mr. Phung Duc Tien, the agricultural sector continues to effectively implement the National Target Program on New Rural Development, associated with sustainable rural socio-economic development, cultural preservation and improving people's lives.
Investing in building and completing agricultural and rural infrastructure systems, especially irrigation systems, to improve the ability to respond to climate change and minimize natural disaster risks.
