On December 11, the National Assembly approved the official investment plan for the airport, which carries a total price tag of more than VND196 trillion (US$7.4 billion).

The airport will be built to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) 4F standards and is designed to handle about 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo per year by 2030, rising to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons by 2050.
Located across four communes in the northern province of Bac Ninh, some 30 kilometers away from Hanoi center, the airport is expected to boost economic development in Hanoi's eastern corridor and the broader northern region. The master plan includes two pairs of parallel runways, spaced 1,800 meters apart, enabling independent take-offs and landings.
The project requires nearly 1,900 hectares of land and will affect approximately 7,100 households. Total investment exceeds VND196 trillion ($7.4 billion), including VND141 trillion ($5.3 billion) for the first phase and VND55 trillion ($2.1 billion) for the second.
By 2030, the first phase will feature a VIP apron, a passenger terminal, a cargo terminal, and a maintenance zone with about 83 aircraft stands, expanding to around 123 stands by 2050.
The passenger terminal will follow five-star design standards, prioritize operational efficiency, and ensure seamless connectivity with national, regional, and provincial transport networks.
Hanoi will be directly linked to the airport via expressways, metro lines, and national rail.
The government aims to develop Gia Binh Airport into a smart, green, and sustainable international airport capable of serving both civilian and military operations. The new facility is expected to relieve mounting pressure on Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi's Noi Bai Commune.
It is hoped that the airport will be placed among Skytrax's top 10 five-star airports worldwide.
