Stay up all night to watch over the water

In An Loi Tay village (Dai Loc commune), hundreds of households are still "stuck" in the middle of the flood, food is gradually running out, people have to stay up many nights to watch the water level rise.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tam (born in 1964, An Loi Tay village), on the morning of October 26, water from upstream poured down in torrents. In less than two hours, the river water rose high and flooded the yard, then the whole house. The flood water kept going down and up for four consecutive days. One night, many households had to evacuate urgently when the water rose up to the roof.

People in An Loi Tay village stayed up many nights in a row to watch for rising flood waters.

“Every night we stayed up all night to watch the water. There was no electricity, and every night we heard the sound of running water, which made us shiver. The peak was on the night of October 29, when the flood rose so quickly that the family of four only had time to evacuate some belongings and then hurried upstairs to avoid the flood. Everyone was exhausted,” Mr. Tam recalled.

Looking at her house still submerged in water, Mrs. Huynh Thi Nam (An Loi Tay village) said that for 4 consecutive nights, she and her children could not sleep as floodwater surrounded everywhere, flowing rapidly from the house to the street.

Ms. Huynh Thi Nam took advantage of the time to clean up mud when the water receded.

Mrs. Nam said that in previous years' flood seasons, the water only reached knee height, but on the night of October 29, the water rose to 2 meters, forcing her family to rely on a motorboat to evacuate urgently during the night.

“Since the flood, the whole neighborhood has stayed up all night to watch the water, everyone is exhausted. At night the wind howls, the water rises in just a moment, everyone is afraid that the water will flood into their houses and sweep away their belongings,” said Mrs. Nam.

Humanity in the flood

Isolated for days in the flood, every household ran out of food and water, and difficulties piled up. On the evening of October 30, when the floodwaters gradually receded, many young people in the village gathered together in boats to row to the main road to receive relief goods.

Sitting on a small boat, Ms. Le Thi Ha, Head of the Front Committee of An Loi Tay village, divided each packet of noodles and bottle of water, stopping at each house to hand them out to the people. Hearing that the relief team was coming, the people waded out in front of their houses to receive necessities after 4 days of struggling with the flood.

Ms. Ha said that this flood rose so quickly that many people did not have time to buy food to store. Although food was running out, the floodwaters were flowing very fast, cutting off many places, making it impossible for people to go out.

“Now that the water has receded, and we see many relief teams bringing essential supplies, everyone is happy. We are using the village’s racing boats, prioritizing bringing in food, clean water and medicine first to promptly support families with the elderly and children,” said Ms. Ha.

Days of isolation in the flood area have left people running out of food and clean water.

In less than an hour, the small boat stopped by hundreds of houses, handing out packages of noodles and bottles of water to the people. The gifts, though small, were enough to warm people’s hearts during the rainy and flooded days.

Despite being exhausted after many sleepless nights, the people of An Loi Tay still encouraged each other to try to overcome. Everyone hoped the flood would recede quickly so they could clean up and stabilize their lives.

According to the People's Committee of Dai Loc commune, the floodwaters have now receded, however, some areas are still deeply submerged, making relief work difficult. The commune government is working with charity groups and philanthropists to coordinate the transportation of essential supplies and support for people in isolated areas.
