The agency “decided to immediately suspend Gabon’s participation in all activities of the AU, its agencies and organizations until constitutional order is restored in the country.” Al Jazeera reported that on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the AU declared its “strong condemnation of the military takeover of power in the Republic of Gabon, overthrowing President Ali Bongo on August 30, 2023.”
The announcement came after a council meeting on the situation in Gabon following the August 30 coup, amid a controversial election in which Ali Bongo Ondimba was declared the winner. The military takeover ended nearly six decades of Bongo family rule and created a difficult dilemma for a region already struggling to cope with eight coups since 2020.
