On May 10, Australian Communications Minister Michelle Rowland and Financial Services Minister Stephen Jones announced plans to establish a joint parliamentary committee to examine and report on the impact of social media platforms in the country .
According to ABC, Minister Rowland said the new committee will investigate the spread of illegal and harmful content on social media; the extent to which algorithms influence what Australian users see, as well as the impact of that content on mental health; and the decision by Meta - Facebook's parent company - to stop paying Australian media companies to post news on this social network.
The committee will also have the power to compel witnesses, including social media company executives, to attend hearings.
In March, Meta said it would stop paying Australian publishers after current deals under the news media bargaining code expire at the end of 2024.
