From the morning of May 27th, several fruit shops, supermarkets, and traditional markets in Bac Giang , such as Thuong Market (Bac Giang city), Thanh Xuan Market (Luc Nam district), and Chu Market (Chu town), have started selling early-season lychees.
Early-season lychees are being sold at Thuong Market (Bac Giang City) on the morning of May 27th. |
Early-season lychees are sold by small traders at prices ranging from 40,000 to 80,000 VND/kg (depending on the variety). Fresh lychees are tied into bunches, with leaves and stems neatly trimmed, making them one of the most expensive domestic fruits on the market today.
Ms. Tran Thi Van, owner of a fruit stall at Thuong Market, said that early-season lychees are sweet with a hint of sourness, not as intensely sweet as those in the main season. However, the delicious, attractive fruit is still selling well. These are the "u hong" and "u trung" varieties grown in places like Phuc Hoa (Tan Yen), Chu town, and Luc Nam district, which usually ripen earlier than the main season lychees. Because it's the beginning of the season, the stall only imported 3-4 quintals (300-400 kg). From yesterday afternoon (May 26th) until this morning, the stall has already sold more than half. In the coming days, as the lychees ripen further, the purchase and selling prices may be lower.
Early-season lychees are selling for between 40,000 and 80,000 VND per kilogram. |
According to many shop owners, the high price of lychees is due to the fact that it is the beginning of the season, so the number of early-ripening fruits is not yet large; transportation and preservation costs have also increased compared to before. In addition, the consumer's desire to buy and enjoy this local specialty fruit to offer as incense on the first day of the lunar month is also a reason why lychees are expensive but still attract customers.
Contacting several early-ripening lychee growers in Phuc Hoa commune (Tan Yen district), My An commune (Chu town), Binh Son commune (Luc Nam district)... we learned that although early-ripening lychees are not yet abundant, customers have already placed orders in bulk or even for entire orchards.
