Bac Giang: Early season lychees have high prices but are still in high demand

BAC GIANG - On May 27 (the first day of the fifth lunar month), early-ripening lychees were sold at many markets in Bac Giang province at common prices ranging from 40,000 - 80,000 VND/kg. Despite the high price, early-ripening lychees still attract customers.

Since the morning of May 27, at some fruit shops, supermarkets, and traditional markets in Bac Giang such as: Thuong Market (Bac Giang city), Thanh Xuan Market (Luc Nam), Chu Market (Chu town), many stores have appeared selling early lychees.

Early lychee prices are sold by traders to the market at a range of 40,000 - 80,000 VND/kg (depending on the type). Fresh lychees are tied into bunches, leaves and stems are neatly trimmed and become one of the most expensive domestic fruits on the market today.

Ms. Tran Thi Van, owner of a fruit shop at Thuong market, said that early-season lychees are sweet with a little sourness, not as sweet as the main season. However, the delicious, beautiful fruit is still in high demand. This is a type of lychee grown in some places such as Phuc Hoa (Tan Yen), Chu town, Luc Nam district, which usually ripens earlier than the main-season lychee. Because it is just entering the season, the shop only imported 300-400 kg. From yesterday afternoon (May 26) to this morning, the shop has sold more than half. In the coming days, the lychees will ripen, so the buying and selling prices may be cheaper.

According to many shop owners, the high price of lychee is due to the fact that it is the beginning of the season, so the quantity of early ripe fruit is not much; the cost of transporting and preserving fresh fruit is also higher than before. In addition, the psychology of consumers wanting to buy and enjoy the specialty fruit of their homeland to burn incense on the first day of the lunar calendar is also the reason why lychee prices are high but still attract customers.

Contacting some early lychee gardeners in Phuc Hoa commune (Tan Yen), My An commune (Chu town), Binh Son commune (Luc Nam)..., we learned that although there are not many early-ripening lychees, there are already customers ordering in quantity or booking the whole garden.
