Garbage transfer site at the gateway to Ho Chi Minh City becomes a park

VnExpressVnExpress30/11/2023

The land, formerly a garbage transfer station in the Vinh Loc residential area, has been transformed by Binh Tan District into a nearly 6-hectare park, providing residents with an additional recreational space.

On November 30th, Binh Tan District inaugurated the central park of the Vinh Loc residential area in Binh Hung Hoa B ward, after six months of construction costing 19 billion VND. The park is surrounded by roads No. 3, 8, 10, and Binh Thanh, and includes features such as pedestrian walkways, a natural lake, green spaces, a community activity area, a parking lot, and other supporting facilities and a lighting system.

The highlight is the central landscaped lake, covering nearly 6,500 square meters. The existing lake has been renovated and surrounded by a safety fence over one meter high. Around the lake is a paved walkway, nearly two meters wide, which branches off into several paths throughout the park.

Mr. Vu Chi Kien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Tan District, said that the Vinh Loc residential area project was approved in 1999 with an area of 112 hectares, and according to the plan, it will have a central green park of nearly 6 hectares. Over more than 20 years of construction, the project has transformed the area from rice paddies into a modern urban area, but the park has yet to take shape due to obstacles in compensation work and planning adjustments.

During that time, the area became a waste transfer point, causing pollution and traffic safety issues. Currently, the waste transfer point has been moved to a different location outside of residential areas.

Ho Chi Minh City currently has approximately 400 parks, including public parks and parks within residential areas, with over 235,000 trees. Inner-city districts have larger park areas than suburban areas. The total planned land area for parks and green spaces in the city is over 11,400 hectares, equivalent to 7 m²/person, but the actual area is very low, only about 500 hectares. With a permanent population of approximately 10 million people, this ratio averages only 0.55 m²/person.

In the medium-term capital plan for the period 2021-2025, the Department of Planning and Investment is tasked with reviewing and advising the city on supplementing projects for the development of parks and public green spaces, ensuring that in the next two years, the urban green space area in the city reaches at least 0.65 m2/person.

Currently, Binh Tan District has approximately 800,000 inhabitants, making it the most populous district in Ho Chi Minh City.
