Italian press: "Coach Spalletti's team plays like idiots"

Italy's leading sports newspaper, Gazzetta dello Sport, commented: "The Italian Football Federation should no longer have faith in coach Luciano Spalletti. Even the President of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina, cannot guarantee his position."

Of all the players, only Donnarumma deserved to wear the Azzurri shirt, with his outstanding saves at Euro 2024. Without Mattia Zaccagni's spectacular goal in injury time against Croatia, Italy would have been eliminated in the group stage.

Unfortunately, that goal didn't change much because the Italian team still played like idiots in the round of 16. They had to fly home after a bitter journey, with a comprehensive defeat against Switzerland.

Italy arrived at Euro 2024 under considerable skepticism, having narrowly defeated weaker opponent Albania 2-1 in their opening match. The Azzurri suffered a comprehensive defeat against Spain and were only fortunate to lose 0-1. In their final group stage match against Croatia, without Mattia Zaccagni's 1-1 equalizer in the 90+8th minute, Italy would have been eliminated in the group stage.

Goalkeeper Donnarumma was one of Italy's few bright spots at Euro 2024. The PSG goalkeeper made several excellent saves in the two matches against Spain and Croatia. In last night's defeat to Switzerland, Donnarumma denied goals from Breel Embolo and Fabian Reider, preventing Italy from losing by more than two goals.

Another prominent Italian sports newspaper, Corrierre dello Sport, analyzed: "Italy was completely outplayed by Switzerland for 90 minutes and was lucky to only lose by two goals. Coach Spalletti made a terrible selection of players, with Gianluca Scamacca disappearing in attack, and Federico Chiesa and Nicolo Barella being too ineffective."

"The early elimination and dethroning of the European champions was a predictable outcome. Italy was not well-prepared, nor did they lack star players when they entered the tournament in Germany."

The newspaper La Repubblica described Italy as "the ugliest team in recent years and their playing style was truly unwatchable." The daily Corriere della Serra rated the Italian team's performance in the loss to Switzerland, with no player scoring more than 5 out of 10 except for Donnarumma, while coach Spalletti received a score of 3.

Finally, La Stampa commented sarcastically: "Italy was humiliated at Euro 2024, typified by the comprehensive defeat against Switzerland. The Azzurri's performance was below continental standards. Coach Spalletti failed to produce any decent football, and surprisingly, President Gravina still trusted him."
