"It won't be easy to get through the group stage as both the Vietnamese and Thai women's teams have quality squads," CNN Indonesia stated ahead of Indonesia's women's team's opening match against Thailand in Group A of the AFF Cup 2025, taking place at Lach Tray Stadium ( Hai Phong ) at 4:30 PM today (August 6th).
According to an Indonesian newspaper, coach Joko Susilo's team has the task of changing the image of the Indonesian national team at the 2025 AFF Cup, even though they will have to face the two strongest opponents in the tournament right from the group stage.

"The Indonesian women's team's best performance at the AFF Cup was fourth place in the inaugural tournament 21 years ago. Since then, the Indonesian women's team has consistently been stuck in the group stage and lost to other opponents," Bola newspaper emphasized.
Notably, in the history of the AFF Cup, the Indonesian women's team has suffered many heavy defeats when facing Thailand and Vietnam. At the 2019 AFF Cup, the Indonesian women's team lost 0-7 to Vietnam. And in the 2022 AFF Cup, the team from the archipelago also suffered a heavy defeat against Thailand with a score of 0-4.
However, that wasn't the most significant defeat for the Indonesian women's team on the international stage, as they previously lost to Australia 0-18 in the 2022 Asian Cup qualifiers.
In September 2024, during a training camp in Japan, the Indonesian women's national team also lost to Urawa Reds FC, suffering another humiliating defeat with a score of 1-18.
At the 2025 AFF Cup, the Indonesian women's national team hopes to improve their performance by calling up three naturalized players of Dutch origin – Isa Warps, Estella Loupattij, and Noa Leatomu – to strengthen their squad.
However, the Indonesian press did not rate the Indonesian team's chances of making an impact highly, as they had to overcome two strong contenders for the championship, Vietnam and Thailand.
