Cong Phuong has just extended his contract with Yokohama FC until the end of 2024. This is surprising news, as the Vietnamese striker did not make any significant contribution to the Japanese club last season. He did not play a single minute in the Japanese national league. He only played two minutes in the Japanese League Cup.

Accepting the offer to stay at Yokohama FC gives Cong Phuong a chance to prove himself. After the club was relegated from the Japanese national league, many of the team's big stars left. Therefore, Cong Phuong needs to seize this opportunity.

According to Targma, Cong Phuong is a talented player but has not been given enough playing time this season. The newspaper suggests that Yokohama FC has been too harsh on the talent of the striker from Nghe An province.

Targma commented: "Cong Phuong is being treated like a rookie fresh out of high school. He is a talented player but doesn't get the chance to show his abilities. Cong Phuong's pride has been hurt."

A Japanese newspaper suggested that Công Phượng still faces significant obstacles at Yokohama FC. "Công Phượng's problem is his lack of fluency in English. Besides that, he's quite shy, like many other Vietnamese players."

Not long ago, the Thai newspaper Think Curve expressed surprise that Cong Phuong decided to stay in Japan instead of returning to Vietnam to seek playing opportunities. The newspaper wrote: "Cong Phuong's future is once again uncertain. It is highly likely that the player will choose to stay at Yokohama FC despite the club's recent relegation from the Japanese national league."

Last season, he only played two minutes in the Japanese League Cup. Meanwhile, Cong Phuong didn't play a single minute in the J-League.

Many Vietnamese teams such as Hoang Anh Gia Lai, Ho Chi Minh City FC, Hanoi FC, and Hai Phong are ready to welcome Cong Phuong, but it is highly likely that the player will not return to play in Vietnam. The striker, born in 1995, wants to try his luck at Yokohama FC, which plays in the Japanese Second Division.

Many key players of Yokohama FC left the team after relegation. This means that Cong Phuong doesn't face the same fierce competition as last season. Therefore, he can hope to get more playing time in the Japanese Second Division.

Previously, Cong Phuong had disappointed at Mito Hollyhock (Japan), Incheon United (South Korea), and Saint Truiden (Belgium). Therefore, he decided to stay at Yokohama FC because he didn't want to be seen as a failure."
