Snowstorm rages, Mongolia warns traffic participants and livestock farmers to avoid disaster risk

On November 6, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) of Mongolia said that a snowstorm raging in the central part of the country has killed eight herders.

According to NEMA, the number of deaths recorded in the two provinces of Tuv and Uvurkhangai included one man, six women and a 12-year-old child. The snowstorm hit Mongolia from the evening of November 3, causing icy roads and making it impossible for vehicles to move due to poor visibility. According to Mongolia's National Meteorological and Environmental Monitoring Agency (NAMEM), the central region of the country was most severely affected, with up to 34cm of snow covering it. The snowstorm is forecast to continue raging in central and western Mongolia in the coming days. NAMEM advised people, especially herders and drivers, to be on guard against the risk of disaster. Mongolia has a typical continental climate, with long, cold winters and short summers. Winter temperatures here are often minus 25 degrees Celsius.

The country is also regularly hit by strong winds, dust storms and snow.
