Betting scandal shakes English football

Tony Bloom, Brighton's chairman and largest shareholder, faces charges over his involvement in a secret £600m betting ring.

Tony Bloom is one of the most famous gamblers and poker players in the world .

According to The Guardian , Tony Bloom is accused of being behind an underground betting system worth around £600m a year, according to documents submitted to the UK Supreme Court. The case shocked the Premier League when documents showed that the network used many accounts in the names of famous figures in politics and sports.

At the centre of the case is George Cottrell, a former aide and confidant of politician Nigel Farage. Cottrell is accused of allowing his identity and betting account to be used for the group's operations.

The documents say Cottrell was not a skilled bettor but his account was given full control to Bloom and the betting group so that orders could be placed without attracting attention.

The case arose after Ryan Dudfield, a former associate of Bloom, sued him for £189 million in profits. Dudfield claimed he had agreed to receive 7% of the profits of the Starlizard Betting Syndicate, one of the world's most successful betting groups.

Dudfield accused Bloom and his associates of falsely reporting that Starlizard had stopped using accounts under Cottrell's name, while in fact the network continued to bet and profit from these accounts.

Starlizard Group has long been known as the probability analysis engine behind Bloom's success, having built a fortune through poker and betting before becoming chairman of Brighton in 2009.

Under his leadership, Brighton transformed from a First Division club into one of the Premier League's most formidable rivals, continuously profiting from the buy-low-sell-high strategy, such as deals like Mac Allister, Caicedo and Ben White.
