On the evening of May 20th, in Hai Phong city, the first National Theatre Arts Festival for Children and Young People in 2024 concluded after more than a week of lively events.

Seventeen performances by 14 national art troupes brought a vibrant artistic atmosphere to the festival, receiving enthusiastic applause from the audience, especially children and teenagers. Each work was a story told through the language of various art forms including spoken drama, musical theater, circus, traditional Vietnamese opera (cheo), puppetry, etc. Many works were inspired by fairy tales, folk stories, and lessons from textbooks, such as "The Hundred-Jointed Bamboo Tree," "Thach Sanh's Lute," and "The Adventures of the Cricket." Many performances recreated history and heroic figures in their teenage years, such as "The Flag Embroidered with Six Golden Characters" and "The Homeland's Sun." Traditional folk songs, chants, and melodies were brought to the stage in a very interesting way, creating a fresh and invigorating experience from a child's perspective.

According to People's Artist Xuan Bac, Head of the Jury of the Festival, the works participating in the Festival all aim towards the beauty of truth, goodness, and beauty; conveying positive messages in a gentle and witty way to teenagers and children.
"Stories that once seemed outdated are no longer so. Characters that only existed in books or stories have now appeared on the stage for children, proving the powerful appeal of performing arts to young audiences. The works participating in the festival all share a common point: they demonstrate the serious investment and meticulous attention to detail of each unit and each artist in each role and performance – combined with creative elements such as authors, music directors, art directors, costume designers, sound and lighting designers," said People's Artist Xuan Bac.

The jury awarded Gold Medals to four plays: "The Cat Who Taught the Seagull to Fly" by the Youth Theatre; "The Return of the Divine Dragon" by the Vietnam National Drama Theatre; "The Adventures of the Cricket" by the Hai Phong Puppet Art Troupe; and "The Magical Sticky Rice or The Story of Bờm" by the Hanoi Cheo Theatre.
