Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) related to tobacco use are being treated at Ha Trung General Hospital.
Tobacco has long been identified as one of the leading causes of many dangerous diseases, especially cardiovascular, respiratory, and cancerous diseases. Not only does it directly harm the user, but tobacco smoke also silently and seriously affects the health of those around them, especially in healthcare environments – places where many patients, their families, and medical staff congregate. Recognizing this, over the years, Ha Trung General Hospital has been implementing a comprehensive set of practical solutions to create a smoke-free environment for medical examination and treatment, aiming to protect public health and improve the quality of healthcare services.
Previously, despite the installation of "no smoking" signs in many locations within the hospital grounds, smoking still occurred sporadically, especially in waiting areas, corridors, and the hospital courtyard. This reality not only affected the health of patients – who have weak immune systems – but also diminished the image of a civilized and friendly healthcare environment.

The system of signs, banners, and posters promoting HIV/AIDS prevention and control in departments and wards contributes to raising awareness among healthcare workers, patients, and their families.
Recognizing that creating a smoke-free environment is not only a requirement of the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harm but also a long-term responsibility and commitment to public health, Ha Trung General Hospital has proactively issued a plan to implement a smoke-free environment in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health. From there, the hospital has gradually integrated tobacco harm prevention and control into its professional activities.
Along with improving the system of signs, banners, and posters for propaganda purposes in departments and wards, the hospital pays special attention to raising awareness among medical staff, patients, and their families about the harmful effects of tobacco and the regulations prohibiting smoking within the hospital grounds.

Ha Trung General Hospital has effectively implemented movements such as "Green Corridor" and "Hospital Flower Lane"...
One of the highlights in building a smoke-free environment at Ha Trung General Hospital is the close integration of tobacco control efforts with movements to create green spaces and landscapes within the hospital. Over the years, the hospital has effectively implemented movements such as: "Green Corridors," "Hospital Flower Lanes," and "Smoke-Free Hospitals"... Rows of green trees and potted plants are strategically placed in corridors, waiting areas, and the hospital grounds. These not only contribute to improving air quality but also create a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere for patients and their families during their visits. The clean, green, and beautiful environment has helped to reduce spontaneous smoking and spread a positive message about a safe and friendly healthcare environment.
Simultaneously, the hospital established awareness teams that regularly remind and check compliance with the smoking ban throughout the entire facility. Violators are promptly and firmly reminded, while still maintaining a civilized and humane spirit, fostering consensus and cooperation from the public.
In clinical departments – where there is direct and frequent contact with patients – the implementation of a smoke-free environment is given special attention. Doctors and nurses not only strictly adhere to the no-smoking policy in the workplace, but also take the lead in conveying the message: "Not smoking in the hospital is protecting your own health and the health of those around you."
Throughout the examination and treatment process, healthcare workers gently incorporate counseling and reminders to patients and their families about the harmful effects of tobacco, especially for patients with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The dedication, approachability, and firm commitment of the medical team have contributed to changing people's awareness and behavior, creating a noticeable shift in compliance with the no-smoking policy at the hospital.

100% of the staff, doctors, and nurses at Ha Trung General Hospital strictly adhere to the no-smoking policy in the workplace, becoming a core force in disseminating information and monitoring the implementation of the Law on Tobacco Control.
Thanks to these coordinated efforts, smoking within the premises of Ha Trung General Hospital has significantly decreased. Many areas previously frequented by smokers are now cleaner, more airy, and more civilized. In particular, 100% of the hospital's staff, doctors, and nurses strictly adhere to the no-smoking policy at the workplace, becoming a core force in disseminating information and monitoring the implementation of the Law on Tobacco Control.
Not only healthcare staff, but also patients and their families are increasingly in agreement with and supportive of the policy of creating a smoke-free environment in hospitals.
Ms. Tran Thi Yen, from Ha Trung commune, currently receiving treatment at Ha Trung General Hospital, shared: "I find the air in the hospital very fresh and clean, without the smell of cigarette smoke like before. The doctors and nurses are always attentive and caring, so my spirits are higher and my health is more stable."
Positive feedback from patients is clear evidence of the effectiveness of creating a smoke-free environment for medical examination and treatment, and serves as motivation for the hospital to continue maintaining and improving the quality of these activities in the future.

Speaking with reporters, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ha, Deputy Director of Ha Trung General Hospital, said: Building a smoke-free healthcare environment is an important and necessary step to ensure a safe environment for patients, their families, and healthcare workers. Over the past period, the hospital has implemented many comprehensive solutions and achieved positive results. Currently, the situation of patients and their families smoking in wards and hospital grounds has almost disappeared. In the future, the hospital will continue to promote awareness campaigns on tobacco control; strengthen monitoring of the implementation of smoking bans; and link the creation of a smoke-free environment with building a green, clean, and beautiful hospital, improving the quality of healthcare services. This will contribute to protecting public health and aiming for patient satisfaction when visiting and receiving treatment at the hospital.
